Spoiler: it could stop the climate catastrophe.
The production of meat, milk, eggs and other animal products is associated with the production of large amounts of greenhouse gases. If you switch to plant foods, the annual carbon dioxide emissions on the planet will be reduced by 68%, declaredRapid global phaseout of animal agriculture has the potential to stabilize greenhouse gas levels for 30 years and offset 68 percent of CO2 emissions this century researchers from Stanford and the University of California at Berkeley, USA.
Scientists estimate that about 30% of the land is used for animal breeding - pastures, farms and other enterprises are located here. According to various estimates, animal husbandry accounts for 16% to 33% of the emissions of the three main greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen oxide.
If livestock production is phased out over the next 15 years and vegetation is restored in these areas, nitrogen oxide emissions will be reduced by two thirds, methane by one third. In addition, 800 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide will be converted into soil, forest and grassland biomass.
The researchers stressed that moving away from animal products would quickly become globally visible and have a long-term effect. They also called for reducing the use of fossil fuels. All this together will help prevent a climate catastrophe, scientists say.
However, it is impossible to abandon animal husbandry in such a short time for many global reasons. So for now, this is just a theory, which can only be realized in small experimental projects.
