This coffee tool will help you rinse cereals and even whip cream.
The French press is the perfect addition to any coffee lover's kitchen. Most often, the device is used to get a particularly strong and invigorating drink. However, this is not all that it is capable of.
Before you use all the capabilities of the French press, you need to remember simple rules:
- Rapid alternation of hot and cold ingredients can crack the flask, so it's best to give it time to return to room temperature before using the device again.
- It should be cleaned after every use. It's easy - you need to pour warm water into it, add a little dishwashing detergent, move the piston up and down several times, and then rinse with water.
But what you can try to do with a French press besides coffee.
1. Prepare a cocktail
If you don't make homemade cocktails often enough to buy a specialty shaker, use a French press. This method works even better for drinks with solid ingredients such as fruits or herbs.
To make a smoothie, add all the ingredients to a French press and then move the plunger up and down to blend them. If you want to make a "dirty" cocktail, raise the plunger before pouring the drink. And if you need to strain solid ingredients, on the contrary, lower it down to the end and only then pour the cocktail into a glass.
Try this unusual Brazilian lemonade. For him you will need limes, condensed milk and water. Cut 2 unpeeled limes into 8 pieces and place in a blender. Add ¼ can of condensed milk and 2 cups of water. Turn on the blender for 5-10 seconds. This will be enough to crush the limes and keep the bitter taste that the peel gives them. Then pour the mixture into a French press and lower the plunger to filter out the solid ingredients. Lemonade is ready!
2. squeeze juice
A French press will allow you to get juice even from a watermelon, you just need to act wisely. On the Internet, it is usually advised to cut the fruit into small cubes, put it in a French press, mash it so that a little juice stands out, and then lower the piston all the way down. In fact, this approach does not work, because the plunger most often gets stuck.
This seems to be because the French press filter is too small to extract a large amount of juice from a hard fruit. Therefore, if you want to get watermelon juice, use a blender first. Then pass the drink through a regular sieve, and only then send it to the French press. The same method can be used for other berries and fruits if the French press does not cope on its own.
3. whip cream
Surprisingly, the French press helps to get the perfect whipped cream. To do this, fill about a quarter of the flask with whipping cream, add two tablespoons of dry cream, and then move the plunger up and down for a few minutes until waves of cream begin to form.
4. Rinse the grits
The main task of a French press is to separate small particles from liquid. And it will work not only for coffee, but also for small cereals, for example quinoa, which can seep through a regular sieve. To easily rinse these cereals, pour them into the device, add water, stir, and then lower the piston and drain the liquid.
5. Restore dried vegetables
Put them in a flask and fill with water. If using cold, refrigerate the French press with vegetables for a few hours or overnight. If pouring boiling water, soak for 1-2 hours. After the vegetables are filled with moisture, simply lower the plunger and pour out the remaining liquid.
6. Give a taste to the water
Place fruit or herbs in a French press, cover with water, and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, lower the plunger and pour water into a glass.
You can use the same technique to add flavor or aroma to other liquids, such as milk or vegetable oil.
