Wuhan scientists report new NeoCoV coronavirus

With a certain mutation, it can enter the human body.
Scientists from the University of Wuhan and the Institute of Biophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the detection of a new coronavirus NeoCoV in Africa. It has similar cell entry principles to SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19. Preprint article about its properties placed on the bioRxiv portal.
According to scientists, NeoCoV is related to the MERS-CoV coronavirus, the causative agent of the Middle East MERS fever. So far, the new coronavirus has been circulating in the bat population in South Africa, but its potential for mutation is worrying.
The mutated NeoCoV will be able to penetrate not only animal cells, but also humans, so even now the cases of the spread of this group of viruses should be carefully monitored.
In the study, we unexpectedly found that NeoCoV and its closest relative PDF-2180-CoV can effectively use some types of bat angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and, less favorably, human ACE2 for entry [into human organism].

The same ACE-2 enzyme uses the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that caused COVID-19 to enter the body, so the “biosafety risk” for humans is quite large.
