Scientists: even a glass of wine a day is dangerous for health
Miscellaneous / / January 21, 2022
Any amount of alcohol increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
World Heart Federation (WHF) stated about the increase in the number of deaths caused by alcohol consumption. In 2019 alone, over 2.4 million people died worldwide due to alcohol.
This is equivalent to 4.3% of all deaths on the planet and 12.6% of the deaths of men aged 15 to 49. Or mortality in Russia from December 2020 to November 2021.
Monika Arora, a member of the WFS Advocacy Committee, emphasized that alcohol producers in their advertising show alcohol as an integral part of a vibrant social life. But this is misinformation, as is the common myth that a glass of red wine a day is good for the heart.
To date, no significant correlation has been found between moderate alcohol consumption and a lower risk of heart disease.
From the report of the World Heart Federation "The impact of alcohol consumption on cardiovascular health: myths and scope"
On the contrary, studies have shown The Impact of Alcohol Consumption on Cardiovascular Health: Myths and Measures
that even small amounts of alcohol can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, including coronary disease, stroke, heart heart failure, hypertension, cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease), atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), and aneurysm.Studies that claim otherwise are “based on purely observational studies that do not take into account other factors, such as pre-existing medical conditions and a history of alcoholism in those considered "refraining".
Mortality among people who consume "risky large" amounts of alcohol has increased especially in recent years. Professor Julia Sinclair, chair of the Department of Addictions at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, noted that the switch to drinking at home is partly to blame. She added that house parties sometimes last several hours longer than gatherings in a pub - accordingly, more alcohol is drunk.
