Visual effects and audio will help you fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Soviet underground.
2. The play "Bukowski"
- When: December 18 and 19 at 19:00.
- Where: Gogol Center.
Charles Bukowski is an American writer whose work has been described as both scandalous and bold and controversial. The director of the play, Anton Fedorov, tried to imagine how one day in the life of a writer could look like. In his production, he combined the reality described by Bukowski with stereotypes about Americans - they love comics, drink beer from cans and live in trailers. The collision of real life with popular speculation creates a new world in which it can be very difficult to distinguish between funny and scary.
3. Exhibition by Thomas Demand "Mirror without Memory"
- When: from September 10 to January 30.
- Where: Garage Museum.
German artist Thomas Demand borrows plots for his work from the press or technical footage from surveillance cameras. Then he recreates these scenes in real size from cardboard and paper, photographs them and destroys them. Looking at these works, the viewer can ask himself the question of what remains in our memory after resonant events. The exhibition includes several fragments and is located on two floors of the museum. The exposition on the first floor is devoted to comprehending the idea of layout, on the second - to its implementation.
4. Exhibition "Mikhail Vrubel"
- When: from November 3 to March 8.
- Where: New Tretyakov Gallery.
This exhibition is the largest display of Vrubel's works over the past 65 years. It presents over 300 works from the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum and other collections. You can see paintings, graphics, work in the majolica technique, photographs of stage costumes based on the artist's sketches, as well as the drawings that Vrubel did when he was in hospitals for the mentally ill. For the first time in a century, two parts of the work "The Prophet", which are kept in different museums, have merged. The exhibition also brought together all three "Demons" written by Vrubel.
5. Lecture "Chichikov at the reception of a psychotherapist"
- When: December 16 at 19:00.
- Where: Gogol's house.
Could Chichikov ever find himself in a psychologist's chair? With what problem would he stay in therapy for a long time? What qualities of landowners helped Pavel Ivanovich in his machinations? What is Plyushkin's syndrome? You will learn all this at the lecture. Philologist Yegor Sartakov and psychologist Irina Vasilyeva will discuss the characters in Gogol's poem "Dead Souls".
6. The play "In the rings"
- When: December 15 at 19:00.
- Where: Moscow City Museum.
“In the Rings” is the work of the Praktika Theater and Brusnikin's Workshop based on the story “Unhappy Moscow” by Evgenia Nekrasova (you may know her from the novel “Kalechin-Malechina”). The capital is protected from harm by seven magic circles, including the Garden and Boulevard rings, the Moscow Ring Road and the Third Transport Ring. But one morning Muscovites find themselves in different circumstances, which force them to change their old way of life and adapt to new conditions. Nekrasova's story was written before the pandemic, and the authors of the play believe that it contains a premonition of the reality that we all faced. This "prediction" makes the performance especially relevant.
7. Film screening “Forest. Who changes the rules "
- When: December 19 at 18:00.
- Where: Gallery "Peresvetov Lane".
The FANC Contemporary Science Film Festival presents an ecological thriller dedicated to the forest. Illegal logging is a global business that generates billions of dollars in revenue. The head of the Environmental Investigation Agency in Washington, Alexander von Bismarck, secretly infiltrates the global a syndicate of illegal timber trade and with the help of a hidden camera documents the chain of illegal action. For some market participants, the illegal sale of timber turns out to be a way to survive, while others are only interested in their own power, and as a result, the world's forest resources are constantly decreasing.
8. Film screening “Bread. Daily miracle "
- When: December 21 at 19:00.
- Where: Gallery "Peresvetov Lane".
Another film screening at the FANK festival dedicated to bread - a seemingly understandable and familiar product. People around the world have been baking bread for thousands of years. They came up with many recipes. But do we know what kind of bread we eat every day? The filmmakers will show how bread production is organized today. You will see large factories at work, meet artisan bakers and grain farmers who can vouch for the quality of the ingredients.
9. Concert “Harry Potter. Symphonic Christmas "
- When: January 15 at 20:00.
- Where: Home Cinema.
If you can't imagine the New Year holidays without the Harry Potter story, but have read books and watched movies many times, then here's an interesting idea for what to do on the weekend. The Chamber Orchestra of Young Virtuosos of the Moscow Conservatory will play the very soundtracks that you heard in the cinema. You can come with the whole family - spectators with children from 6 years old are waiting for the concert. Carefully, after that you will probably want to arrange another film marathon!
10. Play "War and Peace"
- When: 7, 8, 22, 23 December at 19:00.
- Where: Theater them. Vakhtangov.
On the occasion of its 100th anniversary, the theater presented the production "War and Peace". Of course, all the events of the epic were not included in the play: the director Rimas Tuminas chose several important scenes and monologues from Tolstoy's four-volume book, and the production lasted only 4 hours 45 minutes. The result was not an illustration for a monumental text (and it is unlikely that such a task was faced by the creators of the play), but material for reflection on what is happening in the novel. Although you will definitely see familiar heroes here - Natasha Rostova, Andrei Bolkonsky, and Pierre Bezukhov will also appear on the stage. There are two actors in the play. The role of Count Ilya Rostov, for example, is played by Andrei Ilyin and Sergei Makovetsky.
11. World premiere of the opera "Eurydice"
- When: December 4 at 20:55.
- Where: Formula Kino Europe, Formula Kino TsDM, KARO 11 October, GUM Cinema Hall, Formula Kino at Kutuzovsky, Formula Kino at Polezhaevskaya.

On December 4, for example, there will be a live broadcast of the opera "Eurydice". The eternal story about Orpheus's journey to the realm of the dead to save his beloved Eurydice will receive a modern reading in the version of the composer Matthew Aucoin. The premiere at the Metropolitan Opera was supposed to take place in 2020, it was postponed, but in December the opera will finally be presented to the audience. If you do not have time for the live broadcast, then later you can get acquainted with "Eurydice" in the recording - the re-screening is scheduled for December 25th.
