Children's problem about monkeys that can confuse even an adult
Miscellaneous / / November 30, 2021
Test your logical thinking and identify the names of animals.
In a distant land, there lived a cunning magician who could give an answer to any question for a small fee. In this matter, he was helped by three magic monkeys: Ra, Ro and Ri. They looked exactly the same, but Ra always spoke the truth, Ro always lied, and Ri could both lie and tell the truth.
The king of a neighboring state found out about the monkeys and wanted to get them. He sent his wisest minister to the magician and ordered not to return without animals. Wizard flatly refused to sell Ra, Ro and Ri to the minister, but after much persuasion he offered a deal. He will give all the animals to the king's messenger, if he can answer where a monkey is.
The minister agreed and entered a small room. There he saw three monkeys sitting in three numbered cages. He asked the monkey in the first cage:
- What is the name of the monkey in the second cage?
“Ra,” she replied.
Then the minister asked the monkey sitting in the second cage:
- Who are you?
“Ri,” said the monkey.
The minister's last question was addressed to the animal in the third cage:
- Who is sitting in the second cage?
“Ro,” he heard back.
“Now I know which of you is who,” said the pleased minister.
Where did Ra, Ro and Ri actually sit? And how did the minister understand this?
The monkey in the first cage cannot be Ra, since her answer is definitely false. It turns out that Ra is sitting either in the second or third cell. The monkey's answer in the second cage contradicts this condition, which means that Ra is in the third cage. It turns out that in the second - Ro, and in the first - Ri.
Answer: Ri is in the first cell, Ro is in the second, and Ra is in the third.
