Socially significant sites in Russia will provide free access to video

The ministry has updated the requirements for socially significant sites, access to which is not disabled when the balance is zero. They are now allowed to post videos. About it writes Kommersant.

The requirements are described in the new version of the government decree regulating the work of socially significant resources for the "Accessible Internet" project.

Videos on such resources will have a quality limit of 480p, although even with such a modest format the load on operators can significantly increase, which will affect the quality of mobile networks, they believe experts.

It is also noted that socially significant sites are prohibited from downloading information from foreign resources and organizing the possibility of voice and video calls, audio and video messages. Visitors to such resources cannot be offered paid services, with the exception of government services.

As a reminder, an experiment to provide completely free access to important sites has been underway since April 1, 2020. Within its framework, at zero balance, remain open to Internet users

over 300 sites, including "Gosuslugi", "Yandex", "VKontakte", portals of government agencies and a number of TV channels.
