Update the app and check the settings.
Facebook began rolling out end-to-end encryption of backups to WhatsApp for iOS and Android on October 14. About it reported on the official website of the company.
You can protect your encrypted backups stored in iCloud or Google Drive with a password or 64-character key that only you know. Neither WhatsApp nor the backup provider will be able to access your data or your key.
How to enable end-to-end encrypted backups:
- Open "Settings".
- Select Chats → Chats Backup → Encrypted Cc.
- Click Continue and then follow the instructions to create a password or key.
- Click "Finish" and wait until the backup of your WhatsApp chats is completed.
After that, the main thing is not to forget your password or key. Otherwise, you will not be able to restore the backup if you lose your WhatsApp chats or, for example, change your device.
Facebook notes that no other global messaging service of this magnitude provides this level of security for messaging, multimedia, voice, video calls and backup copies of chats.
This feature will be gradually rolled out to users of the latest version of the WhatsApp app. Therefore, it is important to check for updates and install the most recent version of the messenger.
