If approved, even Apple, still using Lightning, will have to submit.
The European Commission has proposed introducing a single standard for charging mobile phones and tablets in the European Union. It is proposed to use the USB-C format, which is already actively used by many manufacturers. For the first time information about this initiative appeared a few days ago, but now the proposal introduced for consideration officially.
Chargers power all of our most important electronic gadgets. With the advent of more and more devices, more and more chargers are being sold that are not interchangeable or unnecessary. We put an end to this. With our offering, European consumers will be able to use one charger for all of their portable electronics - an important step towards greater convenience and less waste.
European Commissioner Thierry Breton
Today's proposal focuses on the charging port of the device itself, but the Commission says it ultimately hopes to ensure “full compatibility” on both ends of the cable. In addition, it is supposed to separate the sale of chargers and the devices themselves, so that you could buy a new gadget without a new charger.
Now the proposal of the European Commission must be approved by the Council of the EU countries and the European Parliament. If agreed, the EU countries will receive two years to implement the new rules on their territory. All manufacturers will have to obey them, including Apple, which in the same iPhones still uses the Lightning port.
