Google Sheets have learned to suggest formulas
Miscellaneous / / August 27, 2021
Google announced a useful new feature in Google Sheets - smart formula hints. It will help speed up data analysis.
Now formulas need to be entered manually, but when you start typing, you will be prompted for autocomplete (for example = SU easy to turn into = SUM). But with a new function after entering the sign = under the column of numbers, you will be prompted to immediately find their sum or arithmetic mean. If you select a sum formula and enter = cell below, you will be offered only the arithmetic mean, since the system understands that you have already found the sum for these numbers. Edition The Verge notesthat the system works with dignity.
To develop these recommendations, Google trained the neural network on anonymized tables. It took into account not only the frequency of use of individual formulas, but also the context of their use by users. For example, if the cell is in a row with the name "Total", the system will offer only the amount. But if you remove the name of the series, the sentences will contain the arithmetic mean too.
The innovation can hardly be called a technological breakthrough, because to introduce = SUM does not present much difficulty. However, it will simplify routine tasks and allow you to work faster with simple data sets.
The feature began to appear for Sheets users with personal accounts, as well as for Workspace, G Suite Basic and Business subscribers, starting from Wednesday. Google promises that it will be available to everyone within 15 days. By default, it will be enabled automatically; to disable it, you will need to uncheck the "Tools" → "Enable Formula Hints" menu item.
