A common Windows virus now infects macOS
Miscellaneous / / August 01, 2021
It gives attackers access to files and user accounts, and is extremely difficult to detect.
Formbook, one of the most popular types of Windows malware, has been around for over 5 years - after the 2020 rebranding, it is called XLoader. How informs Check Point Research, a cybersecurity company, now has a modification available on hacker forums that allows attacking macOS computers.
XLoader spreads mainly through phishing emails - as a rule, cybercriminals induce a potential victim to open an attached file (usually Microsoft Word documents). Once logged in, XLoader is able to transfer account data, screenshots, keystroke reports and makes it possible to remotely run software, while an ordinary user will notice his activity practically impossible.
Interestingly, the prices for different versions of XLoader differ: if the modification for Windows costs 59 dollars per month or $ 129 for three, then for macOS it will cost $ 49 and $ 99 respectively. It is reported that the software has been in circulation since the end of 2020, while for 6 months from December 1, 2020, it was used in 69 countries. More than half (53%) of those affected are from the United States.
The Formbook family has been ranked as the fourth most popular malware group in the past year and the sixth most popular.
