How to make or remove a page break in Word and Excel

What is important to know

A page break is a special markup element that is needed to format a document. It specifies that the text after this marker should start on a new page. Thanks to this, you can separate the chapters of the document - and, regardless of changes in the layout, each of them will always start on a new page. The same is true for typing typed text.

There are two types of breaks: automatic and manual. The first is added by the program itself to indicate the end of the page, taking into account the paper size, margins and scaling; the second is inserted by the user. You can only remove manual page breaks, automatic ones can only be changed by customizing the desired text display.

How to make a page break in Word

There is a special function for this function. shortcut, which is useful for quickly adding a break. Place your cursor in front of the text you want to appear on the new page and just press Ctrl + Enter on Windows or Cmd + Enter on macOS.

If you forget the combination, the break can be made through the function of the same name in the menu. To do this, place the cursor in the desired place, go to the "Insert" tab, select the "Pages" button and then "Page Break".

There is another option. The principle is the same: first select the desired location, then click Layout → Breaks and click Page. All text after the cursor will move to a new sheet.

How to remove a page break in Word

Breaks are not shown on the page normally, so to remove them, you must first enable the display of non-printable characters. Go to the Home tab and click on the paragraph icon in the toolbar.

Now, in the place of page breaks, inscriptions of the same name will be displayed. To remove a manual break, simply double-click it and press Delete on keyboard.

As mentioned, automatic breaks cannot be removed. Instead, they can be moved to a different, more convenient place, leaving the key paragraphs of the text unbroken. To do this, select the desired fragment, right-click and select "Paragraph" from the context menu.

On the Position on Page tab, uncheck the Do Not Break Next, Do Not Break Next, Page Break Before, and click OK.

How to make a page break in Excel

To print a sheet tables on a certain number of pages, the break function is useful. They can be attached to both columns and rows.

For convenience, it is better to go to the "View" tab and switch to the page display mode by pressing the button of the same name. You can just click the icon next to the zoom slider. Automatic breaks appear as dashed lines and manual breaks as solid lines.

Select the column to the right of where you want to insert the vertical break, or the row below which you want to place the horizontal break. Click the Page Layout tab, click the Breaks button, and then click Insert Page Break.

Another option is to simply right-click on a column or row and select Page Break.

How to remove page break in Excel

To remove breaks, you also first need to switch to page mode, as described in the previous paragraph. Next, you need to select the column to the right of the break or the line below it, go to the "Page Layout" tab and click "Breaks" → "Remove Break".
