You need to work less, but more efficiently. Do you agree with this opinion?
Five hours is the optimal time for daily work. This is the maximum amount of time most people can focus on. So considers Alex Pang, founder of a Silicon Valley consultancy and author of several books exploring the link between reduced working hours and productivity.
The eight-hour day is a relatively new concept, widely adopted by Ford a century ago (instead of a 15-hour day). This format has become a means of maintaining production activities 24 hours a day without undue demands on employees.
Then the Ford experiment did indeed lead to an increase in overall performance. In the modern world, new solutions are required to achieve such an effect. Many experts believe that for this it is necessary to switch to a five-hour working day, even despite some of the shortcomings of this format.
- For example, Tower Paddle Boards CEO Stefan Aarstol says he was amazed at the results of the transition to a five-hour workday. The staff worked from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm without interruptions in order to be in time before lunch, and their turnover increased by 50%. It took workers less than three minutes to send each package.
- Lasse Reingans, head of the consulting firm Rheingans, added that while moving to a concise format, they also banned distractions such as smartphones and services like Slack. This also paid off, but after a few months the company realized that they were "losing something at the level of relationships." The condensed format influenced loyalty and team culture, as well as the communication of people within the company, because with a 5-hour work format, you do not have time for chatter, small talk and coffee breaks.
- According to Rita Fontigny, associate professor of strategic human resources management at Henley Business School at the University of Reading, there are clear benefits to tight working hours. This format improves the quality of work life and the financial position of the entire organization. People begin to manage their time more effectively and become more focused, but at the same time they begin to feel additional pressure from the need to complete all tasks in a shorter term.
- Liverpool marketing agency Agent, after years of experimentation, has come to the conclusion that the ideal working time model is a combination of two short and three long days. This format gives you more freedom and flexibility. And if you add up the freed hours, you get two extra days a month, and that's a really great bonus for all employees.
Almost all experts agree that today there are many areas that do not require constant concentration and the use of creative abilities by employees. For such work, the 8-hour format may be optimal. In other cases, a 5-hour day may be most effective.
