AlDente extends the life of MacBook batteries
Miscellaneous / / May 04, 2021
Enthusiasts from Austria have created a small but useful utility called AlDente. It contributes to a more gentle and efficient use of the batteries of any MacBook with macOS 11 Big Sur and newer.
This idea came to the developers after one of them "died" of the MacBook Pro battery after just a year of almost constant connection to the network. After reading more about lithium-ion batteries, he found that such batteries last the longest when used at 20-60% charge.
This is exactly what AlDente allows: it lives on the top toolbar and allows you to customize to what level the battery can be charged. When the limit is reached, the laptop switches to mains power, but stops charging the built-in battery.
The basic version of the utility is free, but there is a Pro version that adds a discharge function - that is, when the limit is reached, the computer not only stops charging, but also switches to battery power. It also has additional settings: for example, stopping charging when going into sleep mode or turning off AlDente and monitoring the temperature of the processor (overheating also harms the batteries).
To use AlDente, it is recommended to disable the macOS built-in charge level control utility.
