How to install a font in Photoshop
Miscellaneous / / April 25, 2021
You just need a couple of minutes.
1. Find and download a font
First, find and download the font you like to your computer. Many good options can be found at Google fonts and other similar resources. Fonts are distributed in two main formats: TrueType (TTF) and OpenType (OTF). Both are suitable for both Windows and macOS.
2. Unzip the font file
Most likely, the font will be downloaded as an archive. It needs to be opened with 7zip, WinRaR or another archiver and unpack it by selecting the "Extract" action. You end up with multiple font files.
3. Install the font
Photoshop uses system fonts, so basically you just need to to set them on Windows or macOS, after which they will be available to the Type tool in the editor.
If you have Windows, open the folder with TTF or OTF files, open the context menu and select "Install for all users". You can just double-click and click "Install" in the window that opens.
If you are using macOS, in the same way go to the folder with the font file, and then double-click on it and select "Install Font".
4. Restart Photoshop
In modern versions of Photoshop, fonts appear automatically immediately after installation. In earlier releases, the editor might need to be restarted to update the list. Alternatively, you can simply close Photoshop before installing the font.
5. Rate the new font
Open the program, switch to the Horizontal Type tool, and try writing something. Highlight a word, open the font list and select the newly installed one.
By the way, the new font will be available not only in Photoshop, but also in Word and other applications on the computer.
