Life hack: how to calculate how many rolls of wallpaper you need per room

Wallpaper without a pattern

1. Calculate the perimeter of the room. That is, add up the lengths of all the walls. It is not worth subtracting the door and window openings from the resulting amount: firstly, the space above and below them will still need to be closed, and secondly, it is better to have a small stock of wallpaper.
2. Determine the number of canvases. Divide the perimeter by the width of your chosen wallpaper. If the result is uneven, round up.
3. Find out how many canvases are in one roll. To do this, measure the height of the walls, then add 10 centimeters to it (stock for trimming wallpaper). Divide the length of the roll by the resulting amount. In this case, the result must be rounded down.
4. Calculate how many rolls you need. Divide the number of canvases needed by the number of canvases per roll.

This is a simple layout for a room with no ledges, niches, podiums, or sloped ceilings. If these elements are present, the height of the walls at their location must be measured separately for each canvas.

Wallpaper with a pattern

If there are flowers, geometric shapes, stripes or other ornament on the wallpaper, you need to ensure that the elements are correctly matched. In general, the calculation remains the same, but when determining the number of canvases, you will have to make an amendment for rapport - the distance through which the drawing is repeated.

The size of the rapport is different: the larger it is, the more rolls you will need. On the label, rapport is indicated by symbols:

• Stripe, arrow and zero. That is, free docking - no special fit is needed, the number of rolls can be calculated as for wallpaper without a pattern.
• Stripe, two arrows on the same level and rapport in centimeters. Direct docking - you do not need to move the next canvas, and the drawing is repeated through the step indicated on the symbol.
• Stripe, two arrows at different levels and two numbers: the first is the rapport, the second is the shift step in centimeters. Offset docking - for the drawing to match, you need to move the canvas vertically by one shift step (usually it is equal to half the rapport).
• Stripe and two arrows pointing up and down. Counter-docking - each canvas needs to be turned over in relation to the previous one.

After determining the rapport, you can start calculating.

1. Find out the perimeter of the room and the number of paintings required. Everything is the same as for wallpaper without a pattern.
2. Determine the number of sheets in a roll. Add 10 centimeters and rapport to the ceiling height. Then divide the length of the roll by that amount.
3. Count how many rolls you need. Divide the required number of canvases by their number in one roll.
