What they say in the first reviews on "Shadow and Bone" from Netflix
Miscellaneous / / April 21, 2021
On April 23, the first season of the TV series "Shadow and Bone" will be released on Netflix - this is the adaptation of the first book of the "Grisha" series by Lee Bardugo. Today, journalists were allowed to publish previews for the entire season. Collected the main thing (of course, without spoilers).
Shadow and Bone is a gripping fantasy drama that has been spiced up with humor to keep the season alive. Since the first season is a mixture of new and famous stories, there is something here for both book fans and newcomers to the universe. The first season is just the beginning of a project that could be the next fantasy hit for Netflix. With adorable characters, compelling acting, and a well-crafted world, Shadow and Bone is worth watching (and even revisiting). — ScreenRant
Overall, the first season of Shadow and Bones is a feat of sorts: it's an adaptation of a book that really leverages the strengths of the show's format to bring the story from the pages to the screens. By adding new stories, expanding on old ones, and uncovering characters, the creative team has created a show that accurately adapts the original while making intentional and interesting changes. However, this show was obviously designed more for those who love the original books, and it risks alienating new viewers who might not want to understand the world.
But if the quality of the first season continues, I would like to see film adaptations of the next books by Lee Bardugo - not only the main trilogy, but also multiple offshoots and sequels. Although the first season retells the first book in its entirety, there are still unresolved questions and important plot points. Hopefully we can see what happens next. — Polygon
Shadow and Bone is not a perfect adaptation of Bardugo's novels. Several important minor characters almost never appeared on the screen, and the crumpled scenes in the Little Palace overlooked some Grisha [bearers of ancient magic] and their abilities. And the show doesn't always explain the basics of Grisha's life well for new viewers, so they may not understand everything that happens on the screen. Nevertheless, on the whole, the series turned out to be a completely magical, exciting adventure of a complex and interesting heroine. — Den of geek
Often, the Chosen Characters in the stories are the least interesting because they simply have to be the sun around which everyone else revolves. The situation is different with Alina, the heroine is as vulnerable as she is brave. If Netflix gives the show enough time to unravel the many intricacies of the plot, there is no doubt that such a heroine will be interesting to watch further. — Variety
"Shadow and Bone" is quite consistent with the 13+ rating, but even so, the creators were able to make some of the episodes really scary and terrifying. In terms of production, this is a beautifully done show with great visuals, from effects to costumes, created by Wendy Partridge and clearly inspired by Russian culture, making the series different from other fantasy fairy tales.
The creators managed to show a new universe in which you really want to immerse yourself. It's always interesting to watch the work of enthusiastic people. In the case of Shadow and Bone, this applies to both the creative team and the characters themselves. — Collider
