It really works.
Since last year Apple stopped equip new iPhone models with power adapters. This decision was perceived by many with criticism and misunderstanding, but the manufacturer referred to the reduction of harm to the environment. Just recently the company released a report in which she highlighted what benefits have already been derived from this.
Apple said it saved 861,000 tons of copper, zinc and tin by eliminating the included power adapters. Energy consumption decreased by 13.9 million kWh and CO2 emissions to 22.6 million tonnes from 25.1 million tonnes. The iPhone's smaller packaging has also reduced its carbon footprint, as product pallets can now hold up to 70% more iPhone 12 boxes.
Removing the power adapters from the box also helped reduce the amount of plastic and zinc the company needed, as chargers use the most of these materials.
Apple also announced that MacBook Air now uses 40% recycled materials, and 99% recycled tungsten goes to iPhone 12 and Apple Watch Series 6. Measures to reduce carbon footprint have also resulted in 39,000 metric tons of e-waste not going to landfills in FY2020.
Apple emphasizes that more than 110 of its suppliers are also committed to using clean energy. The report says that over 90% of the company's partners have already begun to apply the necessary technology to reduce harmful emissions. By 2030, the iPhone maker hopes to be carbon neutral across its entire supply chain. The company aims to achieve this by cutting its emissions by 75% (compared to 2015) and then investing in solutions to remove its carbon footprint.
