"Lost City of Gold" discovered in Egypt
Miscellaneous / / April 09, 2021
Famous Egyptologist Zaha Hawass announced about the discovery of the "lost golden city" of Aton near Luxor. According to him, it is the largest ancient city ever discovered in Egypt. It was found a few weeks after the start of excavations in September 2020, but it was only reported now.
"Many foreign missions searched for this city, but never found it."Dr. Hawass said.
The city dates back to the reign of Amenhotep III, one of the most powerful pharaohs in Egypt, who ruled from 1391 to 1353 BC. The excavations will provide a rare glimpse into the life of the ancient Egyptians at a time when the empire was at its richest.
After 7 months of excavations, several areas were discovered, including the administrative and residential areas, as well as a bakery. Many stone structures were in good condition, with almost solid walls and rooms filled with everyday tools and artifacts.
Also, archaeologists have found a large number of valuable jewelry, colored ceramics, amulets from scarab beetles and clay bricks with the seal of Amenhotep III. In the near future, researchers hope to find untouched tombs filled with treasures.
Betsy Brian, a professor of Egyptology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, said that the discovery of this lost city is the second most important archaeological event after the tomb of Tutankhamun. The latter was discovered in the Valley of the Kings by the British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922.
