Hello! On this topic, Lifehacker has column from a habit forming specialist. She proposes to proceed in three stages.
Stage 1. Choose the right trigger
A trigger is the context to which we attach a new habit. It should be as specific as possible.
For example, say you chose the morning before breakfast to read. Let the trigger be the moment you turn on the kettle when you come to breakfast in the kitchen.
It turns out the following sequence of actions:
- Go to the kitchen and turn on the kettle (this is a trigger).
- Immediately after that, take the book, which is already on the windowsill waiting in the wings.
- Sit down to read (this is a new habit).
Stage 2. Identify a small step for a new habit
If you immediately try to read 50 pages a day (especially in the morning), you will not be enough for a long time. Determine a comfortable volume for yourself at the initial stage. For example, five pages daily.
Stage 3. Observe and correct
After a few weeks, determine if you are able to stick to the habit as you defined it, and if you need to adjust something in the original plan. For example, increase or decrease the number of pages. Track if a new habit is failing and analyze what is causing it.
