Two employees of the Samsung headquarters in South Korea are fascinated by night space photography. Over time, they started to get it so good that their work got on the official site - you can find some examples below. Now they shared tips to help them take such pictures without using a professional camera.
1. When to shoot and what to take with you
It is best to photograph the Milky Way on a moonless night. Do not forget to bring a flashlight with you and powerbank. You will also need tripod. If you don't have a smartphone holder, you can do it yourself.
2. Preparation
Place your smartphone on a tripod as steadily as possible. Connect the remote control for remote shooting, or switch the shooting mode to timer. It looks something like this:
3. Use advanced mode
Surprisingly, not all smartphones are capable of capturing the night sky by default. Switch to professional / advanced shooting mode (the name differs from manufacturer to manufacturer, but the essence is the same: you need the ability to manually adjust the shutter speed and sensitivity).
4. Adjust shutter speed
You need to keep the shutter open for as long as possible to get enough light. If the shutter speed is slow enough, you can even capture the movement of objects in the sky.
5. Adjust white balance
This setting is responsible for making things that appear white to the naked eye to appear white in the photo. For photographs of the night sky, a value between 3500 and 4500 is usually optimal.
6. Adjust light sensitivity
Sensitivity, also known as ISO, determines how much light enters the frame: the higher the ISO value, the brighter the photo. Remember that shooting at high ISOs results in unnecessary noise in the picture.
7. Shoot RAW
In the smartphone settings, select save to RAW. This format allows you to squeeze out the maximum detail, which is very important when shooting space. If the standard camera does not support this function, shoot through a third-party application - for example, mobile Lightroom offers such an opportunity from the free ones.
