YouTuber SuperSaf conducted a large-scale comparison of photo and video shooting on two interesting mid-range smartphones of 2020: updated iPhone SE and recently introduced Oneplus nord. Both devices are atypical, as both Apple and OnePlus are focused on launching flagships, while smartphones cost about the same.
All the screenshots below show the iPhone SE on the left and the OnePlus Nord on the right.
Both smartphones showed excellent results when shooting with difficult colors: they coped with both shadows and highlights.
Portrait mode works better on the iPhone: the system more accurately determines the boundaries of the object, while OnePlus, for example, could not find the border of the glasses and blurred part of the frame. Color reproduction on iPhone is more accurate - especially in terms of color tones.
In terms of macro photography, smartphones are roughly equal - and neither is good enough. If the iPhone lacks the ability to focus at close range (which is solved by shooting from a further distance and trimming excess), then OnePlus copes with this - but the color rendition suffers, and the quality is too low. Better to use the main camera on OnePlus than trying to get good results from the 2MP macro.
In one area, OnePlus wins an unconditional victory - this is shooting in low light conditions with night mode.
At the same time, OnePlus shoots even worse on an ultra-wide camera in night mode than the iPhone - but, in fairness for the sake, the result of both smartphones is mediocre and far from the photos that you want to post on social networks.
When shooting with the front camera, you can see that OnePlus not only takes photos brighter under the same conditions, but also captures more. objects in the frame due to the wider lens, and the picture itself is more detailed due to the higher permission. However, not everyone will like the lightening of the skin on OnePlus and the less accurate color reproduction - this is more a matter of taste and user needs.
For night selfies, objectively speaking, none of these models will be ideal: you have to choose between two evils. If the iPhone leaves the image noisy, OnePlus tries to compensate for that with post-processing, resulting in a more blurry and unrealistic image. This, again, is a matter of taste, but miracles should not be expected anyway.
The author also noted that he likes slow-mo video and audio quality when recording video on the iPhone. Nevertheless, in general, he still liked the OnePlus Nord more, which not only gives more opportunities for shooting, but also costs less.
