At the Summer Game Fest online presentation, the Unreal Engine 5 was announced, which will achieve "an incredible level of detail and interaction with the environment." For the demonstration, we used the game Lumen in the Land of Nanite on PS5. This project will not go on sale: it only shows what the real gameplay of the next generation games will look like.
The capabilities of UE5 are really amazing: in the video at about 6:20, they show a hall with more than 500 statues with the maximum level of detail, which does not need to be loaded if the player decides to inspect one of them. At the same time, the animation is smooth and does not slow down from so many polygons.
Interestingly, the engine itself will be compatible with consoles of the current and next generations, as well as Windows, macOS and even Android with iOS. The preview version of the engine will be available in early 2021, the completed assembly will appear only by the end of the year.
Fortnite will be one of the first games to receive UE5. It will also be included in the PS5 launch lineup (but will run on UE4 for a while).
