After months of rumors and leaks, the Android 10-based MIUI 12 is finally officially unveiled. Xiaomi says this firmware has been redesigned from the ground up to compete with iOS. A beta test for 22 smartphones has already begun, and a stable version for these models is expected to be released in June.
Here are the key changes in the new version of the proprietary interface:
- Completely redesigned icons and animations that are even smoother.
- Large-scale redesign of branded applications, including "Notes", "Health" and "Camera".
- Dynamic fonts have appeared - the color of the text and its contrast in relation to the background varies at different times of the day to reduce the strain on the eyes.
- Application requests for access to GPS, camera and other smartphone services are now displayed in a convenient iOS-style dialog box with the ability to configure access.
- There are new "super wallpapers" for the lock screen and home screen with smooth animation. Among the preset wallpapers are dynamic images of the Earth, Mars and other celestial bodies.
- New motion trackers can track how much you walk and run in a day, as well as how many steps you climbed - and all this will take no more than 1% of the charge.
- All the branded themes that have been pre-installed in MIUI firmware over the past 10 years are now available in high definition - for those who are nostalgic but don't want to see pixels on their screensaver.
A list of smartphones is also available, on which the MIUI 12 beta-best will start on April 27 - however, so far only in China:
- Redmi K30
- Redmi K20
- Redmi Note 8 Pro
- Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro

It is expected that these same smartphones will be the first to receive the global version of the firmware - but it has not yet been specified when exactly this will happen. When announcing a new Mi 10 Youth Edition the company has also promised to update it to MIUI 12 soon - probably the new flagships will receive a new version without open beta testing.
