Curiosity took the most detailed photo of Mars
News / / January 02, 2021
NASA has released the highest resolution panoramic image of Mars from the Curiosity rover. This 1.8 billion pixel image provides an unprecedented view of the surface of the Red Planet.
The image was "stitched" from more than a thousand individual frames taken with the Mastcam telephoto lens mounted on the rover. The resulting panorama allows you to study in detail the desert landscape of the planet and see the Gale crater - it is in it that Curiosity is now located. Also, the photo shows the Slangpos crater, the Vera Rubin ridge, Sharpa Mountain (Eolis), and not only.
All images were obtained at the end of November 2019, when the rover had no other tasks. The photo session was allocated six and a half hours daily for four days. To achieve the same level of illumination in the general panorama, regardless of the shooting angle, the shots were taken at the same time of the local day.
You can get acquainted with the interactive panorama in original resolution at the official NASA website. You can see other photos of Mars in separate material.
