The swing video split the internet into two camps. Which side are you on?
News / / January 02, 2021
Internet users foaming at the mouth are arguing over an unusual video with a man on a swing. What is unusual about him is that people cannot come to a consensus in any way in which direction he is swinging.
The video was originally posted by Twitter user ectupper back in February, and recently re-uploaded to TikTok. There, the video quickly became popular, which led to its re-uploading back to Twitter. The viral video wheel has taken a turn.
Re-post cause it blew up on tiktok, which way is he facing? pic.twitter.com/hG4DY9rg0v

Like most of these videos, it seems silly, because it is obvious: the man is sitting facing the camera... or not? Here are some user comments:
How tf are people seeing him facing the building? His feet and legs are on the front, his arms are seen from the front, his face as well, you can see his hood behind his head. What the heck? There is only one answer, why are there even two options!

How can people even see him sitting facing a building? His legs are in front, arms in front, face too - you can even see that the hood is in the back. What the hell is this? There is only one answer, and there can be no two opinions!
holy fuck at first I couldn’t see anything but him facing the building and now I can’t unsee him facing the camera

At first I saw him sitting facing the building, but now I can’t see him facing the camera!
HE IS FACING THE BUILDING. PERIODT.

FACE TO THE BUILDING. END OF HISTORY.
Entire discussions unfolded in the comments.
He’s facing the camera. If he were facing the building and you look at the top pole it should be covered when he swings back, but it doesn’t which means the top pole is in front of him... aka he’s facing the camera..you’re welcome💁🏼♀️

He sits facing the camera. If he was facing the building, he would overlap the top beam of the swing - but it doesn't. This means that the beam is in front of him - that is, he is sitting facing the camera.
That can be because if you look at the poles there’s multiple. Each swing set has 2 poles on each side. There’s 3 poles on the right meaning there’s an overlapping swing set between him and the camera.

This may be because there are several beams. Each swing has two beams on each side, but three beams are visible to the right - that is, the view of the two swings crosses between the person and the camera.
People even started sketching parts of the video to prove they were right.
if he was facing the building then his arms and legs would be bending backwards pic.twitter.com/FoTXFhnxyZ

If he swayed facing the building, his arms and legs would be twisted back.
Some just gave up and stopped taking it seriously.
he isn’t even swinging. The building is moving away from him
- Tony Minchin (@TonyMinchin) December 23, 2019
He does not swing at all - this building moves away from him.
While there is no confirmation of what is actually happening, here's how you can see both. Follow the direction of the orange arrow to see the person facing the camera, and the pink arrow to see the person facing the building.
For people wondering how some see a way and the others see another way. It’s just a matter of the direction you see him balancing to.. Now I can see both ways! pic.twitter.com/LEcgbRVlat

The same in the video:
i made this to hopefully help people to see both! red = towards building, blue = towards camera. pic.twitter.com/6wlkc3Hp0V

Lifehacker's editors also disagreed: someone is sure that the man is sitting facing the building and nothing else, someone is sure that his face is directed towards the camera. There are those who take turns seeing both versions after several video revisions. What do you see?
