According to testing renowned RF Exposure Lab, specific absorption rate of electromagnetic energy (SAR) iPhone 11 Pro from Apple exceeds FCC recommendations by more than double.
Testing has shown that the SAR level with the device at a distance of 5 mm from the body is 3.8 W / kg - while the maximum allowed level is 1.6 W / kg.
Earlier in 2019, the same laboratory conducted similar testing of some popular models of smartphones from Apple, Motorola and Samsung. Modified tests were performed using manufacturer's guidelines for emission reduction, standard tests in accordance with basic FCC guidelines. Here are the results:
- iPhone 7 - 2.91 to 3.46 W / kg (5 mm) | from 4.29 to 4.69 W / kg (2 mm) - modified test;
- iPhone X - 2.19 W / kg (5 mm) | 2.01 W / kg (2 mm) - modified test;
- iPhone 8 - 1.1 W / kg (5 mm) | 2.64 W / kg (2 mm) - modified test;
- iPhone 8 Plus - 0.68 W / kg (5 mm) | 1.79 W / kg (2 mm) - modified test;
- Samsung Galaxy S9 - 0.63 W / kg (5 mm) | 3.8 W / kg (2 mm) - standard test;
- Samsung Galaxy S8 - 1.53 W / kg (5 mm) | 8.22 W / kg (2 mm) - standard test;
- Samsung Galaxy J3 - 1.38 W / kg (5 mm) | 6.55 W / kg (2 mm) - standard test;
- Moto E5 Play - 0.78 W / kg (5 mm) | 1.25 W / kg (2 mm) - modified test;
- Moto G6 Play - 0.25 W / kg (5 mm) | 0.53 W / kg (2 mm) - modified test;
- Moto E5 - 0.68 W / kg (5 mm) | 1.75 W / kg (2 mm) - modified test.
December FCC after spent re-check of Apple and Samsung smartphones, but no violations were found.
How dangerous is it?
In the European Union, there is a limit similar to the FCC - no more than 2 W / kg. The iPhone 11 Pro is still nearly double the norm, and 3.3x the Apple certification data (1.15 W / kg). In Russia, a different system for calculating SAR is used - W / cm².
WHO does not report on the possible health risks of high SAR in smartphones. However, given the growing popularity of mobile devices, a more detailed study of the possible consequences is necessary. In theory, the lower the radiation absorption rate, the better for the user.
