How to get an electronic tip if the client does not have a "minted coin"
Tips His Work / / January 02, 2021
An urgent problem for owners of restaurants, beauty salons, delivery services and other services: customers often want to reward an employee, but do not. We will tell you why this happens and how you can leave a tip in the 21st century so that it is convenient for everyone.
Why tip at all
It's not just a way to simply thank an employee for a job well done. Tipping affects three parties in the service:
- The employee is ready to try further so that clients come again. For him, be it a waiter, a dry-cleaner or a courier, a tip is a sign that his work is appreciated, that he copes with dignity. It is an expression of gratitude and praise that is a great incentive not to degrade the quality of work.
- The client feels generous and successful when leaving a tip. He could only pay for services, but he is pleased to praise the employee, to emphasize that he is satisfied with the service. And 10% of the bill - this is how much it is customary to leave "for tea" in Russia - often a feasible amount, especially for a satisfied client.
- The business owner also benefits from loyal customers and satisfied employees. A team that does not care about the result will not stay in the institution for a long time, because salaries are unlikely to change. And employees who love and value what they do will be motivated to do even better. In addition, happy customers are good reviews on the Internet and word of mouth advertising. But if there is no tip, this can serve as an important indicator: not everything is in order in the service, customers have nothing to thank the employees for.
Why does the client only pay by invoice
If your employees have recently stopped receiving tips, it may not be that they are performing worse. It is just that for various reasons it is inconvenient for customers to leave them for tea, and this is especially noticeable in the restaurant business.
“Our guests are increasingly choosing a non-cash method of payment in a restaurant and, of course, upon delivery. Staff are getting fewer tips, while guests would like to tip, but they don't have cash. "
Timur Gorskin, co-owner and development director of the Yaposha chain
But even if the client has cash and he would like to reward the employee, he may not always do it, and here's why:
- Only a large amount of cash with you - do not wait for change from it. It is strange to pay for the service with a card, give the employee a bill and ask them to bring change from the tip.
- With only very modest sums. For example, services were rendered for 2,000 rubles, but giving just 130 rubles is just awkward - and the client decides not to leave anything.
Some clients who really liked the service provided are ready to transfer money to the personal card of a diligent employee. And for this, you usually need to enter 16 digits of the card number or indicate the phone number, wait for an SMS with a password, make sure that the money is transferred. The procedure is too complicated. In addition, employees may not want to give a personal card number to each client - and they have every right to do so.
What to do about it
If you can pay for the service with a card, you can also leave a tip with it (and not only in theory). Platforms for such transfers are becoming more and more popular. Such services are already being developed by the world's leading payment systems, as well as large national and international banks.
Electronic tip - it's simple and safe. You just need to register in the system and print a QR code with a link to transfer money. For example, a bartender or manicurist might place it next to their workplace with a corresponding caption that the client is unlikely to miss. Employees of various delivery services can put the code on their business cards and hand them to the recipients along with the orders. In addition, the online tip service can be integrated directly into the delivery service's mobile application. This is how it works, for example, in the product delivery service iGooods.ru.
“There are two people involved in assembling and delivering our orders: a personal purchaser and a courier. Previously, our users had the opportunity to thank only the latter when transferring an order; this was done exclusively in cash. But often the clients wanted to reward the buyer as well, since it is he who is responsible for the selection of quality products with good shelf life. Now the user can send a letter of gratitude to both the courier and the purchaser, for which he does not need cash! "
Grigory Kunis, CEO, iGooods.ru
A customer does not need to install an app or even enter their details to send an email tip. It scans the code and confirms the transaction with a fingerprint or Face ID. It takes seconds - faster than opening a wallet and getting cash from there.
In service CloudTips the e-tip idea has already been implemented in the same way. An employee registers in the system, binds a card to an account, receives a QR-code and prints it in a suitable format (the service has ready-made layouts). Using the code, the client can transfer money directly to this card through online banking, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and even leave a review!
The e-tip solution was implemented back in October 2019 by Tinkoff Bank and the CloudPayments payment service. With CloudTips, anyone can get a tip - from barbers and waiters to couriers and street musicians. The commission is only 5% if the tip goes to the Tinkoff card, and 10% - for the cards of other banks.
The client can leave any amount "for tea". Only the recipient will see it.
