Below is a translation of an interview with Tim Ferris of HackCollege blog.
Only 4 hours? That can not be! Explain to me clearly how to put into practice these tips!
We know a lot of stars in the field of time management, for example: David Allen, Merlin Mann and Gina Trapani. Already, we have to HackCollege has a budding minds.
We know a lot of fitness stars. It Jillian Michaels and other well-known guru of diet and sports, such as Atkins followers Weight WatchersJack La Lenn. The Internet is also constantly ongoing debate on the topic of healthy lifestyles. Now I am thinking Mark Sisson and Steve Camba.
But only one man has succeeded in time management and in the sport. His name is Tim Ferriss, and he was the author of two best-selling version of the New York Times - "4-Hour Workweek" and "Body of 4 hours."
Tim adheres serious philosophy, and it scares many. I bought the book "Body of 4 hours," and, although so far only had time to flick through it, Tim seemed somewhat arrogant. But for a while until I spoke with him and interviewed for HackCollege, I realized that he was one of the nicest guys I have ever run. I'm not exaggerating, Tim was incredibly polite, despite the fact that for technical reasons our phone conversation ended abruptly a few times. And about such a busy person like Tim, it speaks for itself.
Tim and I talked to one of my favorite topics - health and sports, and I asked him to elaborate on how his theory can be applied to the students.
You might be surprised, but Tim thinks that college is much more than a place for learning professionals. How did he manage to drink cocktails, wine, there are a variety of dishes and still maintain the figure? You all know from our conversation.
Sean Quinn (HQ): So this is Sean Quinn, and I interview Tim Ferris for HackCollege. Let me remind you, Tim is the author of the bestseller "4-Hour Workweek" and "Body of 4 hours." Tim, how are you?
Tim Ferris (TF): Everything is fine, thank you for inviting me.
HQ: No problems. And my first question: How was conceived the book "Body of 4 hours" and why she left now?
TF: In fact, from the beginning I wanted to write it "Body of 4 hours." A "4-Hour Workweek", which is now the fourth year is a hit version of The New York Times, has allowed me to get advice of scientists, PhDs, doctors, coaches of Olympic and professional athletes, that I needed to write "The bodies of 4 hours". In general, this book was written because I see a lot of misinformation about diet and exercise, sleep, sex, ultra-endurance, as you call it. I wanted to provide a guiding principle on which everyone can find a non-standard solution for very complex problems. I tried to do it using the "4-Hour Work Week", as it had to do with work and career, beginning a new business, etc. And I suddenly realized, the same approach can be applied to the human body in general. That is, a variety of tests, blood tests, constant experimentation - this is something that directly lead to innovative solutions.
HQ: Well, it sounds great, but a little too abstract. Let's add some specifics. Can you tell me what you eat and what exercises to do for the last 24 hours? And what about the last "day of deception", which was, as I understand it, on Saturday?
TF: I have not done any exercise in the last 24 hours, not counting the 15 minute brisk walk today morning, in accordance with the recommendations of Barry Ross, who coaches sprinters beating world records. As for food, I will only discuss the date, otherwise it will be too long. I woke up and drank 500 ml of ice water and 2 BodyQuick capsule preparation. I then went on a 15-minute walk. After I went into the Thai restaurant where eating pumpkin, zucchini stuffed with curry. More eating satay chicken garnished with spinach and vegetable soup "Tom Yam". Mate drinking tea and unsweetened iced tea. Here's what I do eat for today. In my last "day of deception" I ate paella, dessert, and even tried 12 small dishes "Tasty Kitchen" in Los Angeles. Eating pasta, bread, tons of oil, cocktails, wine, everything to the last crumb. I did not abstain in the "Day of deception."
HQ: I realized: Go to the end or not start at all. Can you make any additions to the program for the students or for those who live in the saving mode?
TF: I think that all of my tips are suitable for students. Many programs and management fail, as applicable in real-world conditions, such as limited budget or lack of time. All this is taken into account with me. In fact, if you really try average cost of a meal can be up to $ 2. The book is an example of Andrew Hyde, who did it.
HQ: It's right.
TF: Efficiency - that is the main idea of the book. Make a few small changes in your life and at the same time to achieve visible results - this is what most suits the students. In fact, when I was in college, I've followed many of these tips.
HQ: I got it. Most of all, I remember a piece of the head about the chipotle pepper, and about how much his students eat. Just now I am in the 300 meters from the library of one of the colleges, and watch what it does. Here's what I want to talk about: as a promotion of your book you suggested gifts for your purchase, I know, as was one of them, as well as a chapter on the female orgasm free. I'm curious, why did you decide to do this?
TF:What exactly why I offered gifts or why I proposed a free chapter?
HQ: The combination of these two bonuses. I'm curious about your promotional strategy for this book.
TF: Among other things, my promotional strategy was to provide as much information, for example on blogs such as Gizmodo, TechCrunch and Mashable, where I have a large circle of readers. I primarily focused on tech-savvy male audience aged 18-35 years. This is my main followers, and so it is for them on the threshold of the holidays I have prepared bonuses. Since the book was published on the eve of Christmas, many bought just two, three or more copies. I offered people an incentive so that they gave my books, and in return received a lot of new readers in the first two weeks after the book.
HQ: I remember very well that. I remember I started to think about a diet to slow carbohydrates, but this time around the corner I was waiting for Christmas dinner. It was too much! And here's another interesting question that concerns me, why all the freshmen and sophomores at the university signed the power which in my opinion is a blatant robbery. But parents somehow thrilled!
TF: Exactly.
HQ: I know what to ask. As a student will be able to stick to a diet based on the use of slow carbohydrates, if before that he always ate something like pizza and sandwiches with fried chicken?
TF: You will easily be able to do it. It's really very simple. You just have to avoid anything white (bread, pasta, etc.) and add to your daily diet of protein and vegetables. It's not as hard as it seems, most people surveyed were able to stick to your diet to slow carbohydrates even in awkward places like this for college or airport.
HQ: In general, yes. I am known on the example. I was signed to a system of power and fraternity when he began to stick to the diet to slow carbohydrates, the main place of power for me was the salad bar. So I was getting slow carbohydrates, which ran the low-fat dressing and just eat more. The daily rate of protein contained in salads and no more nasty things, like chips, potato, fries or anything else with a high-fat diet. Fat - is, in fact, is not so bad, only if the amount is not designed for 80 or 90 guys.
TF:That's right, and as you correctly noted, fat - it's not always a bad thing. I ate only natural beef and almonds for 21 days, and then took a few blood tests and did not see any negatives. Problems arise when you combine too fatty foods with carbohydrates. And then it will have side effects. But if you eat them separately, you will never have any problems.
HQ: Clear. I noted in the previous question, that belong to the brotherhood, and there is a problem, perhaps, is the stereotype of the "drunken students," and maybe it's true, but that the use of alcohol. In the diet to slow the use of carbohydrates allowed a maximum of two glasses of red wine per day, while in college in the course of beer or hard liquor such as vodka and rum. The question is how, in this atmosphere of brotherhood, when all around this beer stench as one refrain from drinking and continue to adhere to your rules?
TF: Here you can take next. Let's say you're already an adult, but it is obvious that the spirits you can not eat, but you can drink something like Marguerite, instead of vodka and soda. Look for more information on this topic. Margarita is popular even among those who adhere to the Paleo diet. Just choose one day a week and heartily enjoying a cocktail at the output. Beer does not fit into a diet to slow carbohydrates, because maltose in beer digested faster than sugar, and sometimes even faster than glucose. Imagine that you eat 2 or 3 donut from Krispy Kreme every time you drink a bottle of beer, here is the impact you have on your weight. This is no exaggeration. So, it is necessary to observe moderation, and allow yourself anything only output.
HQ: It's funny that here in Gainesville, Krispy Kreme is located in close proximity to the center, where most of the bars. That is, no matter how much beer you drink, you're probably more and eat a dozen donuts.
TF: Oh yeah.
HQ: It seems to me that you are using the Pareto Principle - the 80/20 in both his books, though perhaps it is more related to the "4-hour work week" than to the "Body of 4 hours." I know that the "4 hour work week" you have applied this principle to a career, but, whether you are the director of the college as you would use it to facilitate the educational process?
TF: What do you mean by simplification? Eliminating lessons?
HQ: I remember that the main point in the "4-hour work week" is minimalist principle. In my opinion, the elimination of classes would be just in the spirit of minimalism.
TF: While I do not have a full answer to your question, but I think he will, he will be very different from what you expect.
HQ: It sounds promising.
TF: A big mistake many students - viewed only as a college job training. College is designed to make you a versatile developed person, who would later be able to educate ourselves. So do not focus exclusively on employment, for example on the economy, suggesting that it then will help you in your job search. I know millionaires and billionaires who never graduated from college, and very often it is the source of their self-doubt, and they are trying to hide this fact, but the main thing - is to develop their curiosity, to focus on what is really interesting and you get results in this area. My specialty was profiling Eastern countries, it was hard to learn, but I really liked in college, and I think that many would like to go back in time. So I do not see college only as a "factory" for the production of high-paying. And I do not have an adequate answer to your question.
HQ: I think it's all very well, and you told me much more than I expected. I was not going to put it as a separate item, such as "Tim Advice on College," but, in my opinion, the answer is different. And that's what I really liked and that made perceive the book more seriously, because it's your proposal, even before it became a best seller, your offer to be skeptical. You seemed to say, "Hey, if you doubt that it works, then do not believe my words! I'm no expert. "So what prompted you to make such a reservation at that time, how many books devoted to diet, claim that only their methods only correct?
TF: First of all, I see this book as a guide for smart experimenters, and I have absolutely no desire to be steadfast in their science guru. I want my readers are used to ask questions. I want them to know that the basic work required of them. I do not want to become a crunch, to which they listen every time, trying to make a decision. The goal is to make them completely independent, so that they will be able to identify pseudoscience. That is why I recommend that from the beginning to read the book critically and skeptically.
HQ: Ponyatnenko. Many students from all kitchen appliances have only a microwave and perhaps a blender. Do not tell me how to cook breakfast for your system in such conditions? You have to book talked about lunch and dinner.
TF: Easily. If the goal - a diet, look for 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes after waking up. My dad did it - he began to lose 5 pounds in a month, and in the first four weeks lost 18.75 pounds, and all because of this little innovation. It can be hard-boiled eggs, or maybe just cold water, ice and a protein shake with no taste, except that a small amount of almond oil added for flavor. It must be the breakfast "on the run". This is the real solution for the majority of students who are preparing even less than I do, and I almost never cook. Everything, except for breakfast, I eat out.
HQ: I really liked this book. For me, the problem has always been that I am a sociable guy and for me the food was rather an occasion to get somewhere out of the house. It is therefore very pleased to see that the guy that's 2-3 times a day goes somewhere to eat and at the same time lead a healthy lifestyle. I was too heavy to sit on a diet, but I think that's what I like most of the students concerned. I would also like to build up and muscle mass. I talked with some members of our fellowship who are not particularly interested in a healthy lifestyle, but to follow the fashion and drink additives, such as EC Stack and AMPED! Or even something popular. It would be interesting to know your opinion about the supplements and in general, if it works?
TF: Oh, it can be a very long answer. So I will answer this question only about diets. The biggest problem with most popular supplements - they are strong stimulants that can cause a lot of problems from the adrenal to sinusitis. In college, I used strong stimulants in diet time that included ephedrine, caffeine and aspirin in combination, and it caused a problem. Bouts of fatigue and other side effects. So I have long thought about the possibility of the use of stimulants in diet time. The alternative, which I reached, was the PAGG - policosanol, alpha lipoic acid, green tea extract and garlic. In the right doses. Green tea - bezkofeinovy, so it is - not an enabling approach. Appeal to students who are always trying to save money - you do not need supplements! If you are dieting correctly, it will reach its goal of 5 weeks, and with the addition of over 4. Not that it matters, and significantly save money.
HQ: Amazing! Well, who wants to learn more about supplements, diet to slow carbohydrates and female orgasm (which I cleverly avoided), - you can buy Tim's book Amazon or at fourhourworkweek.com. Thanks Tim, I had a great time and really enjoyed our conversation.
TF: I also was very nice. By the way, fourhourbody.com you can see some chapters of the book, as well as my video clips and photos.
HQ: Thanks again, Tim, for this valuable information.
