Critic Alexei Khromov believes that the new project turned out to be tough, vital and very funny.
The streaming service Hulu released the first season of the animated series Solar Opposites. Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland conceived it back in 2015. Then he posted the first sketches on his Twitter.

But it has come to implementation only now. And this is even good, because literally all fans of adult animation now know the author.
So, a family of aliens is saved from a dying planet and is wrecked on Earth. While the heroes are repairing their spaceship, they are forced to live in an ordinary American town. But aliens just can't get used to humans. And this regularly leads to different problems.
Royland brought in Adult Swim writer and producer Mike McMahan to work on the project. Together, they have created a great satire on modern society, filled with familiar rude humor.
1. It's like Rick and Morty, just simpler
Even at the first glance at the picture, you can recognize the author's style. Parallels with "Rick and Morty"Really a lot. At the same time, the new animated series does not turn into its copy.
One should not expect insane travels to parallel worlds and space travel from "Solar Opposites". Royland acted very ironically: in "Rick and Morty" he sent earthlings to other planets, and here he lodges aliens among people.
But otherwise there are a lot of coincidences. Even in the main characters, it is not difficult to notice some intersections with familiar characters. The head of the Corvo family is brilliant and rude like Rick, and his naive and positive partner Terry clearly resembles Morty.
At the same time, the heroes have replicants (analogous to children). They, like Morty and his sister, deal with teenage problems.
But not only the heroes are alike. They have dozens of crazy inventions like the shrinking beam, the slowing beam, the beam forcing obey, many other rays, compact black and gray holes, nanobots in sewers and so on.
And then the author still does not hold back and adds a second storyline, which develops in a slightly different world with its own laws. Almost like in the series about Rick the gherkin. But it's better not to talk about it, so as not to spoil the pleasure of viewing.
2. There is a lot of familiar hard humor
It's no secret that many people love Rick and Morty for the abundance of adult jokes. The authors are not shy about talking about sex, showing grotesque violence and making fun of any hot topic. All this has moved to the "Solar Opposites".
Here every minute someone's head is blown off or the streets are smashed. And at the same time aliens study people and put all kinds of experiments on them.
In addition, Corvo already in the cutscene explains how much he hates Earth. And he confirms this literally in every episode, although he does not abandon attempts to please his neighbors. Therefore, you need to be prepared that they will speak directly and very harshly about all human problems. And this is the third reason to watch the animated series.
3. This is a look at people from the outside
The idea of showing humanity from the perspective of an alien is, of course, not new. But "Solar opposites" hit on the spot with allusions to the problems of society.
On the very surface, of course, there are ideas of racism: children are badly treated at school because of their differences. In general, the neighbors do not like the alien family, often for no reason. But Royland does not get stuck on this problem, he goes through it only in passing.
But it does cover a lot of other issues. There are elections to self-government bodies, problems of puberty, and the inability to establish family life. And in one of the episodes, Corvo is hunted by his own stress.
But one should not think that "Solar opposites" go into some kind of moralizing and sociality. First of all, this is a very funny satire, not propaganda.
4. There are interesting pop culture references here.
The show's writers don't just tell a new story. They constantly refer to the classics of the genre. After all, it is impossible not to mention "Alpha" in a comedy about aliens.
There are dozens of references here. In one of the episodes, the heroes recall a movie every couple of minutes. In another, you can see characters from movies and cartoons (hint: they are in cages). To find everything, you need to carefully look at the inscriptions and just visual matches.
In general, for fans of retro fiction "Solar Opposites" will be almost like "Very strange things».
5. You can see right in the evening
And the last thing worth mentioning is the convenient format of the series release. The next episode of "Rick and Morty" has to wait a week. And then Hulu posted all eight episodes at once.
So each viewer can decide for himself whether to watch everything in one evening or stretch the pleasure.
There is no point in talking too much about Solar Opposites. This animated series will surely appeal to all fans of Rick and Morty, South Park and other adult animation. He is simple, tough, vital and, most importantly, very funny. That is exactly what it should be.
