In the recent interview for Entertainment Weekly, Jonathan Entwistle and Sean Levy (director and executive producer of "I Don't Like It") shared details about the show and how it worked on it. Collected the most interesting of what they said.
The resemblance to Stranger Things is nothing more than a coincidence
Levy is known as a director and executive producer "Very strange things». Therefore, the comparison with the new series is not surprising: these are two dark stories, in the center of which is a teenage girl with supernatural powers. In fact, the coincidence is accidental.
According to the producer, after successfully working on Stranger Things, Netflix asked him to select and produce any project he thought would be just as fun. The first season of World's End was released that same week, and Levy realized he wanted to work with this director. - and Entwistle, in turn, at this time was already thinking about the adaptation of the graphic novel “This is not like".
The show differs significantly from the original comic
The original graphic novel is rather dark, and Entwistle did not want to work on the topic of teenage suicide: "This has been done before, and I don't think it's a good topic for fun." Therefore, the goal was to change some aspects of the story, but at the same time leave the theme of depression, which makes the plot more interesting. He also added elements of teenage shows that he himself watched in his youth.
The creators were inspired by all teenagers - from Twin Peaks to X-Men
At the pitching Entwistle presented the show as a mixture of Lady Bird and X-Men - and all the rest of the superhero, for that matter. The entire mass culture of 1980-2002 became a direct reference: from Fargo and Twin Peaks to Hooligans and Nerds, Girls in Pink and Dawson's Creek. The director aimed to recreate the atmosphere of the world from the teenage series: a mixture of all possible styles in clothing and surroundings, in order to get something timeless, not just retro.
The length of the first season is a token, not a limitation
Although most Netflix series offer longer episodes, "I Don't Like This," like "The End of the ***," consists of episodes no longer than 30 minutes. At the same time, it develops rather slowly - which is atypical, given the limitations of the format. In fact, Entwistle's advice to treat the season more as a full-length film, divided into episodes is a kind of experiment on the platform's capabilities.
The show will have as many seasons as viewers want
In an interview, the creators admitted that they want to continue working on the series in the format of the first season: something that attracts viewers, forcing them to watch all the episodes at once. According to Entwistle, he is ready to work on the series as long as the producers allow him, and while the audience will be interested in watching it.
