In the movie "Judy", the actress reminded the audience how good she is, beating Scarlett Johansson and Saoirse Ronan.
The film's director, the Englishman Rupert Gould ("True Story") is mostly known for his theatrical performances. And this time the master did not change himself and took as a basis the play "The End of the Rainbow" by Peter Quilter, which describes how the star of "The Wizard of Oz" Judy Garland spent the last months of her life. Her fate is considered one of the most tragic in the history of American show business.
At the end of her career, legendary Hollywood singer and actress Judy Garland (Renee Zellweger) went bankrupt. After the next concert, she has nowhere to go to spend the night with two small children, and her ex-husband is going to sue for custody.
Hoping to improve his financial situation, Garland goes on tour to London. At first, the British accept Judy with open arms, but she cannot work due to the strong depression. It turns out that Garland was forced to work for wear and tear from the age of two, and greedy producers stuffed the girl pills, which subsequently resulted in dependence on alcohol and barbiturates, as well as chronic insomnia.
The talented Renee Zellweger did an excellent job and practically reincarnated as Judy Garland.
And she did it honestly, convincingly and with the utmost respect for the legendary artist. The most interesting thing is that at first glance, Zellweger's game looks excessive and even grotesque, as if an actress does not depict a living person made of flesh and blood, but simply pours out exaggerated feigned emotions.
But it is enough to look at any archive recordJUDY GARLAND sings BY MYSELF and receives a standing ovation 1964to understand how the star of "Bridget Jones's Diary" flawlessly conveys the habits, facial expressions and gestures of her heroine. Renée Zellweger performs everything independently songs (the actress was preparing for the role for a long time and diligently engaged in vocals) and dances, exactly repeating the movements of Garland. So there is no exaggeration here.
Unsurprisingly, the Academy has praised such top-notch acting.
According to all forecasts, it was Zellweger who should have received the statuette in this nomination. And so it happened.
At the same time, the actress had many strong rivals, for example, the brilliant Scarlett Johansson with her sincere performance in "Marriage Story" and the young Irish woman Saoirse Ronan, who played the main role in "Little women». But it was Zellweger who, according to film academics, was worthy of the most important world film award. This is a balanced and fair decision, and the long-awaited triumph of the actress, whom everyone has already begun to forget, looked very spectacular.
