A useful and well-designed thread has appeared on Twitter. In it, Sergei Pishchalnikov, a shooter fan and one of the hosts of the video game podcast "At the End of the Universe," tells how to start enjoying playing shooters with a gamepad.
A little preface. I have been playing shooters on a gamepad for over 10 years. I have decent, in my opinion, skills and K / D in multiplayer is consistently above 2. Tried many gamepads (including Scuf), modifications and settings, mastered the Clow method. I have something to tell you. pic.twitter.com/ilQX3BDOrw

Undoubtedly, among you there are those who play much cooler than me, in a completely different way, to which you are used to. It is not for nothing that cyber-hotshots ride to tournaments with their own devices and settings. My goal: to share personal experiences supported by objective facts. Go! pic.twitter.com/46vV0Gl1c8

To begin with, the default viewing settings in all shooters are terrible. They are intended primarily for those who first picked up a gamepad. For everyone else, there is a chance to become better, but you will have to abandon old habits and almost learn to play again.

Dead zone
#1. Dead zone. In an ideal world, we would simply unscrew this parameter to zero and in a moment become the best sniper on planet Earth. But we are still where Morgenstern is popular, and therefore deserve punishment for the sins of humanity. pic.twitter.com/xtb03DWKFr
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
The quality of 3D analogs in modern controllers leaves much to be desired. Even in gamepads for the price of a console, it is no different from stock. And most likely generations will pass until the engineers finalize this mechanism to the required accuracy. pic.twitter.com/5AyRxfBLV9
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
Therefore, this parameter depends on the instance of your gamepad and you will have to select it yourself. Strive to a minimum, but so that the scope does not go too far to the side without your knowledge and you can control it. pic.twitter.com/1Wh67Cpmg0
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
Viewing sensitivity
#2. Review sensitivity. Sensa, like tastes, is an individual concept. It needs a special approach and it is possible to identify THAT SAMU only by means of long practical wanderings. But the principle is simple, like Press X To Win. pic.twitter.com/lTWD5oYbtQ
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
Strive for the maximum, but look for your comfortable limit. You can smoothly increase this parameter when you realize that the current speed is not enough for you. But start with values above average, everything below is from the evil one. pic.twitter.com/NToToVvAvq
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
Output curve
#3. Output curve. Secret forbidden knowledge begins with this setting. Selecting the correct output curve will allow you to get closer to the accuracy of the keyboard. No kidding, some of them blamed me for this when they saw my gameplay. But, unfortunately, this setting is not available everywhere. pic.twitter.com/06F9JLVNZg
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
The standard output curve represents the deceleration of the scope when the stick is deflected to the middle and a gradual decrease in the effect after. It is slow, unresponsive, and extremely ineffective. In essence, this steals from us more than half of the stick travel, which could help us with micromovements. pic.twitter.com/kg3KvhtdFb
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
Therefore, our choice is: a linear curve, or its analogs. In this case, you will get the opportunity to quickly turn 180 degrees, and comfortably bring the sight on the enemy's head from a sniper (fu-fu-fu, I condemn). All "controllers" of the sight speed, if any, must be turned off! pic.twitter.com/BSt33sSlvi
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
Aim assist
#4. Aiming assistance. Contrary to the accusatory speeches of many clavomyshers, in the multiplayer of most shooters this thing practically does not work, and sometimes even on the contrary - it interferes, clinging to knocked down enemies. pic.twitter.com/OSIkqCkFcG
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
It all depends on the specific game and its developers. Once a year, the stick fires, and therefore if the help works adequately, then it is better to leave it. You will hardly notice the work of the assistant, but once out of a couple of hundred skirmishes, he can help you come out the winner. pic.twitter.com/EbdVJXBFeh
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
Vibration
#5. Vibration. If you are playing a single player game and you do not care about super precision, feel free to skip this step. Vibrating in a single is an awesome way to communicate with the game and you shouldn't deprive yourself of that. pic.twitter.com/afkEiTNqEr
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
But if you want to play online jokers and take this matter seriously, turn off vibration. You'll be amazed at how much easier it will be to track enemies when your gamepad doesn't shake like a damn jackhammer. pic.twitter.com/RiJ9GNkPCJ
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
line of sight
#6. Line of sight. Large values of this parameter can negatively (but not critical) affect the FPS, due to the fact that with the expansion of the visible area, the area for rendering also increases. Therefore, on consoles, this is a rare guest, but on a PC it is much more common. pic.twitter.com/zomzNwOE0U
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
If there is such a setting, then it is worth turning it to the maximum. Yes, the models of enemies will become smaller, but this way you will better see what is happening around and it will become easier for you to control the battlefield. This will affect the sensea as well, seemingly slowing it down, mind you. pic.twitter.com/tbI9zgN7km
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
See for yourself. On the left, the field of view is 70 degrees, and on the right, 110. The effect is evident. pic.twitter.com/5YE6jyvr2b
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
Motion blur
#7. Motion blur. This effect is the worst evil you can think of for a shooter. The screen is blurred when you move the sight and it is simply impossible to see anything at this moment. You can convey a sense of speed in more eye-pleasing ways, kamon, developed! pic.twitter.com/aAA7lvPQ1S
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
Therefore, if it can be turned off, do it immediately. This includes other effects such as aberration, graininess, additional camera shake, and anything else that can interfere with your view. In single projects, you can leave something, the main thing is not to forget about your own comfort. pic.twitter.com/wjdcaLSvbf
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 16, 2020
Refresh rate and display response time
#8. Refresh rate and display response time. So we went from settings to hardware. The quality of your display is the key to almost half of your gaming comfort. You can read about hertzovka in the help, but the response time is also important. This is the time it takes for the display to switch colors. pic.twitter.com/BdkhdzUOVW
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
Good GTG (gray to gray) response times are 1 to 5 ms. If your screen has inferior performance, consider upgrading. So you see the picture much later than it is actually rendered, thereby feeling the input lag. Hertzovka rate - 60Hz and higher. pic.twitter.com/142VF8YjWI
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
High stick
#9. High stick. From the school geometry course, we know that the longer the radius, the larger the circle. And the larger the circle describes the stick, the more accurately we can control its position. Please note: I rarely reject such a stick with all the settings above. pic.twitter.com/f6AyneSr4F
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
There are several ways to get hold of a high stick. Either buy an extended stick and install it instead of the standard one by disassembling the gamepad, or simply take a high pad, of which there are several types. The best option is plastic, with a rubber coating on the top. pic.twitter.com/7By76T5xeK
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
Personally, I use a KontrolFreek FPS Freek Galaxy replica for 500 rubles with Ali, which is in no way inferior to the original. Fully silicone pads quickly begin to slide and scroll, and very cheap china (even on plastic legs) does not hold well and flies off the sticks. pic.twitter.com/o3naJ4ReQ8
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
Link to the overlays in question: analogue of KontrolFreek FPS Freek Galaxy.
I often saw that it is recommended to bring the sight to the enemy with the left stick. Never do that! This method is only suitable for very green beginners. Use the left stick to strafe and out of the line of fire, but aim only with the right! If you are left-handed, then vice versa. pic.twitter.com/SfLm4NyAuC
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
Petals and back buttons
#10. Petals and back buttons. An important point and a must-have for everyone! MANDATORY, no BUT! This is the most convenient way to never lose control of your game or take your fingers off the sticks. The truth is not cheap. The second option is free - the previously mentioned Clow method. pic.twitter.com/kvl0nP1rOS
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
Clow's method is interesting, but not a panacea. For many, it is simply inconvenient. It is still unclear how it will affect health in the long term, whether it will accelerate the onset of some kind of tunnel syndrome or something worse. And one finger for four buttons is not enough! pic.twitter.com/0wEQXztwtY
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
In order to lie directly behind cover and, for example, recharge, AT THE SAME TIME, one cannot do without petals. But key remapping can help out here. It is better to assign shooting and aiming to bumpers or use special limiters for triggers, also an option. pic.twitter.com/eSs2YE99Yj
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
Sound
#11. Sound. It is not necessary to take headphones for 100,500 million rubles, and not very expensive, but with decent quality, will do. The main thing is that they have good positioning. You can check it in any game with sound propagating correctly in space. pic.twitter.com/fwQ2pw41Wc
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
A high-quality and well-placed audio system in the room may also work. Check in practice, well you can determine the direction of the sound in the game or not. Some eSports players generally wear regular earplugs, so the headphones shouldn't even be GAMING! pic.twitter.com/A6GSqszMri
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
Gyroscope
#12. Gyroscope. Finally, I'll leave room for experimentation. I myself am not a fan of all these whistles with motion control and movement of the gamepad in space. This joke with a gyroscope did not work for me even on Switch. But I know people to whom this input method is very even ok. pic.twitter.com/VgkQwCe1vK
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
And it's not very clear, the future belongs to this and it is still worth trying the gyroscope as an auxiliary method of aiming, or all this is superfluous and you shouldn't even try to get used to it. Write your opinion in replies. This time I need your advice! pic.twitter.com/tiyxrXZylw
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
conclusions
What conclusion can be drawn from all this? Out of the box with the console, we get a defective gamepad, which is poorly adapted for comfortable playing jokes. Yes, you can buy accessories separately and make them out of the usual, say, Dualshok, your faithful companion in shootouts. pic.twitter.com/xYzBvky1u3
- Sergey 🤍❤️🤍 Pishchalnikov (@Borlader) August 17, 2020
When the sticks stop drifting and the dead zones disappear, when the rear buttons become an obligatory part of the gamepad, and the developers come to new standards, then the real nextgen will come.
I would really like that such a world was not a utopia ...
But it's hard to believe. pic.twitter.com/fdXx1Q5ogj
