Twitter has a new important and useful thread. In it, a girl named @lleevike shares her experience of living with dyslexia: she tells how it can manifest how it affects life and what can be done to help yourself or a loved one with such feature.
Personal experience
1. To begin with, I want to clarify that you may notice familiar symptoms, but this is not at all an indicator that you are dyslexic, in order to know for sure, consult a psychiatrist
I lived 26 years with dyslexia and didn't know about it, I thought I was just dumb and not considerate lol- lehmike (@lleevike) July 8, 2020
2. I thought so because of suggestion from others: teachers, classmates, parents. A few months ago I came to my psychiatric clinic with a dz, I had to read her a letter to my grandmother. I warned her that I have problems with reading, so I will read strange

3. She listened to me, asked around about my childhood, how I read, etc., and made a "diagnosis" I already suspected about it. In quotation marks because it is not a disease, it is rather a difficulty. People with dyslexia have no problems speaking or writing and can read, albeit with difficulty.

4. I was considered stupid until grade 7, and in grades 1 and 2 I stayed for the summer because of the reading technique I had a stake a year All June I sat with a teacher who, like a kite, hung over me and gave me a slap on the back of my head, since I did not even reach 1/2 of the norm for reading words in minute
- lehmike (@lleevike) July 8, 2020
6. The teachers gave up on me. But not a strict biologist. Somehow it happened that in the 7th grade I got the first in my life 5th for a non-creative subject, in biology. After the lesson, the teacher came up to me and said “now it will always be like this.” And so it happened :)
5 I got a trace. way:- lehmike (@lleevike) July 8, 2020
7. Mom suggested that I read the paragraph about the digestive tract of pigeons aloud several times, so that it would be easier for me to remember the information and it worked. So I finished my studies up to grade 12. 4 were only in physics, chemistry, mathematics and Estonian, the remaining 5. I just read everything to mom

8. I confused words, stupid, hung on the floor with a word. But after 3 readings, I calmly went to the lesson and told everything as it should. At university, I first heard the word dyslexia, it was in three of my classmates and I thought "wow, these British whiners are always making up problems for themselves."

Possible Symptoms
The way dyslexia manifested itself in the author of the thread and how it feels - the coincidence of all the symptoms is not necessary, but it can be considered a wake-up call if you saw yourself at several points at once.
10.
🔸 When I read, I hover in the middle of a word, my brain seems to be downloading a continuation or even guessing. But he does not succeed, in 70% of cases the words that my brain thinks out are not the ones that are written
🔸 Sometimes the letters are reversed or the ending is cut off in words- lehmike (@lleevike) July 8, 2020
11.
🔸It is difficult for me to read whole text, not broken into small paragraphs. Even if I wrote the text myself.
🔸It is difficult for me to read from a colored contrasting background or paper, the letters are lost from the brightness of the color
🔸It's hard for me to read not sans - serif font All curls / italics / decor - can't read- lehmike (@lleevike) July 8, 2020
13.
🔸 I quickly lose concentration, forget about what I read, that is, space out. It will be tempting to strain hard to hold attention
🔸I make a lot of mistakes in the letter and even after checking 5 times I will not see them
🔸 I confuse left and right, I am not guided in space (yes, this is also a symptom of dyslexia)- lehmike (@lleevike) July 8, 2020
14.
🔸If they tell me how to get there or give instructions, I instantly forget
🔸I confuse events and memories, everything merges into one
🔸 I confuse the pronunciation of words, the words themselves. And those types of kyr a pig, but right during a serious presentation I can say depilation, instead of a declaration- lehmike (@lleevike) July 8, 2020
15.
🔸 When I write by hand, I confuse the spelling and letters in the word (when I wrote a letter to Polina, I ruined 3 postcards like that)When they show me a meme or a tweet from the phone, I don't even try to read, because if I try, the person's hand will dry out earlier to hold the phone for so long

What to do if you or a loved one has dyslexia
20. Dyslexia is not cured, but it can be curbed:
🔸 Break the text into paragraphs, the less the better. Bullet points are your friends
🔹 Choose sans serif font, the easiest
🔸Choose plain white reading paper
🔹 Choose a larger font pic.twitter.com/wxz7JXU2j9- lehmike (@lleevike) July 8, 2020
21.
🔹For better learning, read aloud several times, hearing the text in your own voice, you will not lose concentration and after a few times remember the information.
🔸Do not hesitate to talk about your dyslexia at school, work, friends. People now have the same attitude towards dyslexia as towards depression.- lehmike (@lleevike) July 8, 2020
22. "Just sit down and read" = "just stop being sad"
This is a serious problem that affects a person's studies, especially during exams and testing. A person with dyslexia needs more time to complete assignments because they need more time to read- lehmike (@lleevike) July 8, 2020

23. I was an excellent student and, at the same time, I did not score above 65 in any exam. I simply did not have time to read, everything was confused before my eyes and everything became more complicated due to time constraints.
A person with dyslexia may not know they have a problem and need help- lehmike (@lleevike) July 8, 2020
24. Try to help this person, send them to a doctor for testing, make life easier with the help of the points above. And also EXPLAIN to him everything that he does not understand and DO NOT LAUGH at his not understanding, this is very unpleasant
- lehmike (@lleevike) July 8, 2020
25. IMPORTANT: we are not stupid funny fools! They laugh at us all our lives, and especially in adulthood. We shouldn't be ashamed of our peculiarity. Help and support us.
Thanks 😊
