While the ending of the second season seems open enough for several more seasons, showrunner Zach Estrin confirmed that the decision to end the episode so quickly was not spontaneous:
“From the beginning, we thought of this story as a trilogy. An epic family adventure in three parts with a beginning, middle and end. It is worth noting that in each episode the heroes try their best and overcome a lot in order to just survive - so Will, Penny, Judy, Maureen, John, Don West, Dr. Smith, Robot and of course Debbie the chicken deserve some rest before their next mission ".
It is unclear what is meant by rest - that the third season will not be released in 2020, or that the story will end happily for this unusual family.
Netflix also confirmed that it has signed a contract with Estrin for several years to come - so we will see his work in the online cinema again. What episodes he will work on is still unknown.
