Artem Loginov
Vice president of product services for the study Lingualeo languages. Previously, he worked in the department of geo-services "Yandex". One of the founders of photo-service 500px.
What do you do in your work?
Officially in my post Lingualeo It called the VP of Product, that is, I am responsible for the entire product work in the company, as well as for the design, UX-design, teaching methodology of language, product marketing and research.
But in fact my job - to be constantly dissatisfied. This is my way to never rest on our laurels and are constantly craving the development, improve the little things and move forward.
Before Lingualeo I'm four and a half years spent in the "Yandex" in the department of geo-services. When the first came, I was asked to make from scratch routing for public transport. It was 2010, and "Yandex" had excellent service with traffic information, routing for good car, a good search for addresses and organizations, but the service for those who travel without a car, not It was. As a result, we are a small team launched routing for public transport, which could work around the world. Even managed to find somewhere the routes and timetables of public transport, which at the time was awful daunting task.
Later I switched to mobile direction and became head of mobile "Yandex. Cards. " There, in addition to the development of the product itself, we have a huge team build a large-scale and highly complex platform, which I, unfortunately, before the end of NDA can not tell.
Prior to joining the "Yandex" we Zhenya Chebotarev created the famous photo service 500px.comWhich it is now one of the hottest startups in the Valley. Even now I sometimes went to see him on a visit to the office or hang out in their corporate home in Palo Alto.
What is your occupation?
In my time in any university of the country did not have faculties, even remotely related to IT-Management.
So I have two degrees - in law and management, and the master's thesis, I wrote on the economy. On the topic of "Economic assessment of the effectiveness of the brand." At the time, none of the Russian teachers about the brand is not heard, so grandparents in the commission listened to me as an alien, speaks Klingon. I'm sure they did not understand anything of what I was trying to convey.
Despite a number of entities, I believe that they were useless to me. Somewhere in the third year, I realized that lectures do not give me the necessary knowledge, and began to carry books to the Institute of the Stockholm School of Economics. Sat down with them in the farthest row of the audience, and while there was some kind of lecture on philosophy or logic, a half hour reading. For the remaining courses read a lot of things, and it gave me at times more knowledge than all my higher education.
Then I started to go to the lectures of various well-known business dudes like Thomas Gad (Tomas Gad), Kjell Nordström (Kjell Nordstrom), the man who wrote "Funky Business"German or very cool guys - Kobolla Claus (Klaus Kobjoll). He owns a hotel near Nuremberg and won a bunch of awards for all sorts of amazing customer care. He licks them that this is a genuine delight. I advise you to read his books - there is a lot to learn, especially modern Russian e-commerce, in which customer care is severely affected.
Last year, I attended a lecture HR for Startups at Stanford (described in detail in its his Facebook). At that moment I realized what it was I did not like the Russian education. I wanted in high school gave really useful knowledge to be able to get out of the institution more or less prepared for the real work. But I had to learn everything myself. Especially what concerns IT and doing business on the Internet.
I'm inspired by the way of doing business and grocery boys from the Valley. They think differently and live for two or three years in the future for us. Every time there communicated with several talented executives, I start to look at many things from a different angle.
As a result, I have a couple of useless diplomas, self-management and IT. It turns out that I'm a man without a profession. :)
How does your workplace?
With regard to the workplace, I confess the old saying, "Where fell - there housewarming." The laptop is always with me, I work from anywhere where there is Wi-Fi and poured coffee.
I'm happy if I leave with a cup of coffee by the sea, under the pine trees.
Important for me to be mobile and be able to work at the airport, on the train or cafe anywhere in the world. Usually my workspace looks something like this.
Once I got here just to work in a cafe in the center of Palo Alto, posted a photo on Facebook and jokingly wrote that it is now a new Lingualeo office. Some journalists did not understand the joke and asked for an interview about the opening of the US office of our company.
Since then, I sometimes repeat the trick, and almost every time the same effect. :) If the picture get some people attribute, if it is our new employees.
In the office, I have a table, but I almost never use it. On it I have long been stacked someone's things - I have no idea whose. Usually I sit at the first available ottoman or a sofa and work. More in our office has a bright chairs, deck chairs, where you can comfortably fall apart. I love to work for them.
I have two phones: iPhone and Nexus 5. But it is a necessary measure in order to understand the nuances of both platforms and see the difference in applications Storey ecosystem.
Yet I have a Googley Moto 360, but I quickly enough of them, and as a gadget hardly ever used. I wear more like an accessory.
A couple of years ago tried to go with Google Glass (when they first came out), but also quickly became disillusioned and more do not use them.
BY
I tried to make all of your tools in the cloud to access them from anywhere.
- Mail client I have not - I use the Gmail web version.
- Documentation lead to Google Docs.
- Calendar of meetings in our Lingualeo also from Google.
Browsers I have is five pieces, but most often use Shrome. Why? I have a stupid habit to open 30, 40, 50 tabs and keep them for weeks. Usually so I save interesting articles to read them later, or documents that you want to add / read / comment. In Chrome, it's best to keep open as many tabs at the same time.
Corporate communication we have going on in Slack, which is integrated Jira. I posted on Facebook a description of one of the cool Case such integration.
For personal contact before using WhatsApp, but recently moved to Telegram - bribed the availability of useful bots. Formed themselves desired news flow and enjoy reading through the bots all I needed IT-news. I suffer only that there is as yet impossible to call - in WhatsApp I enjoyed it. Durov, make calls!
The mobile is actively using Facebook and Instagram - in each of them formed the necessary flow of information to me. In Instagram look at pictures of different beautiful places on the planet, hotels and castles. So I choose a place for the next trip.
The Facebook signed on actively writing IT-people, as well as the group of publications of interest to me (VC, Edutainme, Layfhaker, TechCrunch, AppTractor). So I consume through its picture of friends I needed information.
Especially dearly love GoPractice group which leads Oleg Yakubenko. He wrote very correct things about the product performance and analytics. Well, in general, Oleg, I love and respect immensely since the days when he was an analyst in my team in the "Yandex".
Yet I have is Photoshop, for which I pay for something at 299 rubles per month. Although I use it a couple of times a year, when I want nice treat some special fotochku. But give it up I can not - makes itself felt photographic past times 500px.com, when I was myself an active interest in photography. Then I spent half a day in Photoshop, processing tons of pictures. But then I coded, tied.
Is there a place in your paper work?
Sometimes I draw mockups by hand on a piece of paper. For example, if you want to demonstrate your thought designer, sketching out a few screens and transition logic between them and the show, what I mean. But more often it is done on a flip chart.
What is in your bag?
To work is enough for me laptop and phone. In fact, only in their bag and wear. Everything else - documents, music, pictures - stored in the cloud.
In addition to the laptop in my bag:
- documents on the car;
- Two contactless chip, which open the machine and allow it to have a button;
- passport - like in the joke: "Coming out of the house, just in case, take along a passport" (there were cases that came in handy);
- purse with different cards, use "Roketbankom", "open" and "Tinkoff";
- wireless headset to listen to music from the phone.
Traveling with red suitcase, which has already become an independent hero in my Instagram. He has more shots from around the world than me.
In the suitcase to the above things added clothes, a bunch of chargers and adapters for outlets around the world, and sometimes more, and Apple TV. This is to share the screen on your TV in someone's office. Also available through the Apple TV, you can watch movies and TV shows from your laptop.
How do you organize your time?
Hard mode I have not. Approximately half of the weekly working time occupied various meetings. I suffer very much from this, so try without a good reason not to go there, where there is no clear agenda or question can be resolved without me.
On Thursdays I "fish day" - is marked in the calendar as a not for meetings. On this day, I can not be invited to the meeting. I dedicate myself more tasks that require many hours of concentration. For example, to write some kind of document or update the Roadmap, or to work on the analysis of English language teaching methods.
I like to optimize their time in trifles and household matters. Remember this about Zuckerberg's story, with its dozens of identical T-shirts, not to spend time deciding "what to wear today?" Of course, I'm not so uporotyh, but in recent years has ceased to buy clothes in actual stores, ordering through the Internet. Same with food, electronics and other things - I can not remember the last time I bought something offline.
But most of all I like to work on weekends and holidays, I go in the morning in one of his favorite cafes and sit there with a laptop, order a coffee and into the evening working on something important.
What's your daily routine?
Usually I go to bed late at night - in 2, 3, 4 o'clock. Respectively, and I wake up late. I realized that if I sleep less than eight hours, the head thinks twice as bad. Therefore, if I lay down late, better to sleep an extra hour, but then effectively spend the rest of the day than to wake up sleepy and ruined himself day.
I can not sleep until late at night because I work at this time more productively. I can focus on and write important letters or documents. At this time, no calls, no write in the messenger, does not fit with the matter.
In the morning I have, perhaps, only a couple of banal rituals. Lying in bed, I glance over IT-news in your Facebook-tape. This allows you to wake up and turn his head. And staying at home almost every day runs into the next coffee shop and take with the coffee drink in the car.
How to pass the time in traffic jams?
I try not to get into a situation where I need to pass the time. This happens very rarely, and I prefer in such moments, just think.
I do not stand in traffic jams: me from home to the office to go far, and usually no traffic jams along the route. But I like to walk on foot at the weekend, listening to the music track. I used to have for this was the iPod 120 GB. I liked him for two reasons:
- No need to recharge every day.
- You can switch directly into the pocket to the touch. With a smartphone that does not happen.
But a year ago, I still listened to music through your smartphone and switched to strimingovye services. Tried Apple Music - did not like. Now I use "Yandex. Radio". Initially, the service recommended me some garbage, but his husky / dizlaykami I quickly its "taught", now he guesses the proposed tracks more and better.
I am using "Yandex. Radio "also at work: turn on the quiet background music or any sounds of nature such as rain or the noise of the surf and under this work. I really helps to focus.
What's your hobby?
Very much I like to look at different places of the planet. In five years, parents dragged me to kayaking across Russia. I have been almost everywhere: in the Urals, the Baikal, in Yakutia, Karelia, in Kabardino-Balkaria, on a pile of small rivers in the middle lane. Perhaps only to the Far East it is not reached.
So I looked in the campaign somewhere in the mid-90s.
Still occasionally, but happy to raft on any river. Not forgotten how to cope with canoe or kayak. On the raft I can also go through serious rapids, but I for some reason this does not give much pleasure - too boring. Kayaks I like a lot more. For two reasons:
- You spend a lot of time in the calm water. This is a very meditative pastime.
- Around there are no distractions: no cars, no city noise, no TV, no internet, even phone usually does not catch the signal. You're a few days you remain alone with yourself, your thoughts and the simple pleasures of life: to sail on the river, swim, make a fire, cook a meal on it, sleeping in a tent, play the guitar. When more and your company to take a right, then a couple of days you come in better than a holiday in the Maldives.
When the kayak does not work, I go to Europe. Painting, I can not stand, so I do not care about museums. But I'm a wild fan of history and architecture. I do not feed bread, let me look at the ancient ruins in Italy, half-timbered village in Germany, narrow houses of Belgium and the Netherlands, or the old French chateaux in the Loire Valley.
My dream is to have alpaca. Once seen such in Switzerland, she lived in zagonchike in the backyard of an ordinary house. Very cute and funny beast. And useful - coat of wool can be done.
From each city trying to bring Starbucks mug. They are all made in the same design, differing only in color and the name of the city. I was going to have a good collection.
Sometimes I begin to feel that I am well versed in wines, and then I go to some of Tuscany or Burgundy, from cite a few rare bottles of red. Also I collect.
Another my hobby - to walk in other people's offices and see how everything works. Usually I ask friends to give me a tour of the office of one or another well-known company. In Russia, I visited the offices of almost all major IT-companies and fashion startups. So far, I have to display the office "Roketbanka" - they have a very cool, and the children themselves cool.
In the Valley, I was inside the offices of Apple, Google, Facebook, and more about a dozen others. Most of all remember the office Evernote.
Previously, they had a cool feature: each manager had to defend two hours a week at the bar in the lobby. Come you're such a visit in Evernote, ask for a cup of cappuccino, and it prepares you CEO - Phil Libin (Phil Libin). In my opinion, very cool.
Layfhakerstvo by Artem Loginov
about Business books already told. From a little-known highly recommend reading Claus Kobolla. You can start with the books "Motivation in the style of ACTION"And"Without risk there is no buzz».
Of art recently I reread "Monday begins on Saturday"Strugatsky (or rather, listen audiopostanovku). I realized that it was the story of "Yandex», Google or any modern large startup. When people are interested in doing things you love and studies on human happiness than to have fun or stay at home.
Yet I somehow hooked the book by Dan Brown, which has not removed the film "The lost symbol"And"deception point». Like when until the last moment you can not guess the outcome.
Movies
I can only recommend the well-known classics:
- «Rocked»;
- «Beaver»;
- «Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai»;
- «Hero»;
- «Amelie»;
- «Highway 60»;
- «The 51st State»;
- «Spring, summer, autumn, winter and Spring»;
- «Zatoichi»;
- «Limitless».
The last "trainee», «bridge of Spies"And"game for a fall».
Of TV series I like "Sherlock" from the BBC and the "House of Cards." In principle, the "Game of Thrones" is also the rules, but there is already affecting my love for medieval British history - a large part of the plot of the series is taken from the wars and court intrigues in the Middle Ages in England.
Blogs and Websites
Ever since the distant 2004, I tupil to "Lepre". But last year I "Latvian" and very proud of myself. It is believed that the old-timers do not remember where the exit with the "leprosy", and I found it. I want to appeal to children to stay there: the lepers, Jovan deceiving you! With us here are well treated. You are in a hopeless situation, give up!
What is your life motto?
The word "da" can write a single letter.
