Michael Tokovinin
In 2003 he graduated from the MADI. In 2004, together with two friends founded QSOFT. Currently heads amoCRM online system. Lives and works in San Francisco.
What do you do in your work?
I am one of the leaders of the online accounting system for the sales force amoCRM. Responsible for product strategy and development of the company. A little more involved in the company QSOFT. But it takes very little time: almost no operational issues, or project management.
What is your occupation?
I'm an engineer, a motorist, he graduated from Moscow State Automobile and Road Technical University (MADI). I'm not in high school and loved the car - it is a sufficient reason to be in this university.
Towards the fourth year I started to enjoy the study, chose the most science-intensive of the proposed specialties with a minimum of applied sciences. In this case, in fact from the second year I have worked in IT. I can not say that do not work on a specialty - consider themselves first and foremost as an engineer.
My dream is to rise above and see what there is.
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
At different times the same quality and have helped and hindered. For example, stubbornness, impetuosity, passion. I'm not exactly the most pleasant head, I had great difficulty to learn less to offend people, but I still have work to do. I'm not the most effective negotiator: bad pent-up emotions.
I know a lot of problems behind him and try not to just change, and build the processes, taking into account its features.
How does your workplace?
I have three jobs: a house and two offices. And everywhere you will find a computer, smartphone, and two sheets of paper with a pen.
I can not imagine working without a pen and paper, always something to write, draw, write, and be sure to regularly transfer to-do-list. I like ordinary white sheets, trying not to print anything unnecessarily, but a lot of writing by hand and make notes. Do not store your recordings as soon as they become irrelevant, immediately throw away.
I'm not a geek: I do not like new devices rarely have a computer. I have a normal iPhone, which I update every two years. And I do not use any covers, labels, or add-ons, because I love that thing looks exactly as it created. It seems to me, any "tuning" just spoils. Even he could not bring himself to use external battery, because it is necessary to think about.
Recently, to my list of gadgets add a wireless headset. I began to spend seven hours a Skype (affects remote work), but I love to walk around the room during the conversation.
I do not use any external monitors or devices not see the need. I am also not interested in what my heart rate and as I went through the steps.
In the work with the phone I was conservative. Rarely add applications and almost never see them without the need is not updated. Almost I do not use push-notification. You could say that I'm boring: I do not like anything too much, I love the order and even on the first screen, I have a free space. There's all that I need: maps, banking applications, instant messengers, Facebook, and, of course, amoCRM. The rest could be removed.
As a browser using the regular Safari. It's an old habit of using something different from what is customary among developers. For example, I used the principle of Internet Explorer, until it was large enough share. For me it is a way not to lose the reality and force the company to keep in mind that there are various browsers.
Mail clients also use built-in operating system. I understand that they are not perfect and there are better, but is willing to suffer for the opportunity to feel better than the mass market.
The main messenger for me - it's Facebook and Skype. Both are absolutely terrible for corporate use, but still better than the "Jabber", which were before.
What is in your bag?
I try not to carry anything extra, and in the bag I mostly empty. There's only a laptop, mouse, headset, and charging pen. In the US added more checkbook.
If I go somewhere, the backpack can migrate Case for glasses for phone charging and a journal that I sometimes buy out of habit at the airport and do not read. All that I need is in the computer, phone or purse.
How do you organize your time?
I have no time management technique. There are red flags in the mail, calendar events and to-do-list on a sheet of paper. I note the letter, which must be answered, according to the calendar of meetings and try to regularly by hand to rewrite their to-do.
I rarely very busy. Of course, there are times when many, many things need to be in time, but it is rather an exception. I think most people just like to be always "busy" to run somewhere and not think.
But if I feel that dug, then I sit down and transcribe to-do-list - it helps me focus and not to miss anything. I am a person who does not have unread emails: I hate a clogged inbox. Therefore, the messengers, if I can not answer right away, just mark messages as unread.
Needless to say, I have plans for a few months and a year and a half ahead. But do not any applications or methodologies for that I - all in the head.
I am inspired by a desire to achieve more.
How do you feel about the delegation of authority?
Very well. But I think that it requires a lot of resources. To qualitatively something to delegate, you need to make a serious effort. The functions are more systemic and repeated, the more likely their delegate. Paradoxically, but work with the development team to delegate easier than going to the housing office.
I do not like any personal assistants and aides. No, if I had hundreds of meetings a month, then I guess I would need people for their organization. But usually personal assistant turns into poor "interface" of me that just spoil good relations with partners and contractors.
What's your daily routine?
Now I'm a night owl, a lark: affects work on two continents, and 11-hour time difference. I get up at seven in the morning, I check my email and messages. 7:30 in turn communicate with colleagues in Skype on current issues. For example, I take some work. From ten in the morning until one o'clock, when Moscow was too late, I continue to communicate over less urgent matters and to move smoothly into the office. With an hour to six engaged our US operations. Then go home, dinner, private time, and at ten o'clock at San Francisco (nine in the morning Moscow time) spend two planorki morning and go to sleep. I try to go at midnight.
The peak of creative activity I comes after eight in the evening. Sometimes I can get excited about some ideas and sit up late at night.
How to pass the time in traffic jams?
Mainly in the Facebook, but also like to listen to the chatter on the radio. Music most like to listen to in the car, and the house is now prefer headphones, because I like to be loud, and the headphones I have never stopped anyone.
What's your hobby?
My dad says, "the scientist can not be a hobby!". I have no special hobbies. A little play on the piano, I can ride in a car or airplane, but it is not keen on me. I prefer simple walking, Trips to nature, "cottage", sitting by the fire, mushroom picking.
I'm happy every time it turns.
I do not like to rest. The greatest pleasure it gives me a job when something turns and feel the drive. Why take a break from your favorite things?
What place sport occupies in your life?
No. Absolutely indifferent to the sport. Not interested in any of view and can not tolerate exercise. I find it very stupid and useless. You want to keep yourself in good shape? Take the stairs, walk on foot, Eat less.
Layfhakerstvo from Michael Tokovinin
I read few books. Ashamed to admit it, because I too was brought up on the idea that it is necessary to read a lot. But we proceed from the false assertion that if knowledge is packaged in a book, it is better and more valuable. It is a long time not so. Research Article, documentary, A public dispute between two experts carry more meaning than a hundred pages of artistic research.
I do not like TV shows and watch a little movie. I do not like works of art. But the transmission of how something is arranged, or documentary movie ready to watch excitedly.
I can not select or recommend any specific videos, but TED video you can watch just about everything.
As for blogs and websites, is now the most interesting things I bring friends to Facebook.
What is your life motto?
There are a few sayings that I use almost every day. I think that together they form my credo.
- Recognition of its lack - the first step on the way to his correction.
- Responsibility do not give - it is taken.
- Who wants to, looking for opportunities, and who does not want to be looking reasons.
