Victor Chekanov
CEO Megogo in Russia. Previously led the distribution department in "Rambler" was the manager of business development Yota and manager of special projects and business development "TNT-Network". Holds an MBA in strategic management in MIRBIS and London Metropolitan University.
What do you do in your work?
For four years, I have led the Russian segment of the high-tech and the largest Russian-language video service in the world Megogo. By "high-tech", I mean multi-screen service available in all countries of the former Soviet Union, with the Russian-language content viewing capabilities anywhere in the world. We are also pioneers in the delivery of video and TV content for VR-devices.
What is your occupation?
You'll never guess what I do for a profession. When people hear who I am by training, they are very surprised and exclaim: "As an ecologist came to that, to deal with high-tech and distribution of legal content ?!".
Just choice of profession It is not always a one-way process. This needs a "mutual chemistry." Sometimes profession chooses you, and you realize that you're interested.
After graduation, I was drawn to something new - I joined the company, which later became known under the brand name Yota. And even then, in 2008, we started to work on VOD- and online-TV-services.
Is it worth spending five years living in the academic education?
Spending on education is much longer than five years of life. Learning must be exactly as long as the person lives. As long as we learn something, we are developing. I understand this truth and start your path to new knowledge.
For me one of the worst things you can imagine - is to wake up in the morning and realize that ceased to evolve. This is a classic degradation.
Many people tend to every three, five or seven years to feel the need for knowledge that will make another personal breakthrough. Therefore, people are getting further education, whether it is training or second, third, tenth tower.
But everything has its time. So, after graduating from university, I gave up graduate school. A few years ago, I received an MBA in Strategic Management. Soon again I plan to continue their (academic) education.
What should know and be able to a person working in your field?
In addition to professional knowledge about how the VOD market, it is very important to have a certain set of human qualities.
Not everyone will be able to feel comfortable in the IT-company. In our line of people live in a system of burning deadlines and constant "arms race." Moreover, when the company is developing in the right way, when strategically chosen targets correctly set goals and objectives for the business, for the most part it competes not only with other services as herself a. In this regard, the people working in this company, to compete with them tomorrow, those who they will become only.
Before us it is always a very high bar. One should always be collected, to be able to react to external stimuli and sometimes unpleasant coincidence. A person should have a high level of responsibility, even if it is just an assistant department.
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Let's start with the strengths:
- Determination, which was embodied in the business tseleorientirovannost.
- Sociability, which was modified in the ability to share responsibility between business stakeholders and share successes with others.
- Believe in yourself. It is very important, because with age, this feature translates into confidence in what you're doing. Without an internal confidence I have never obtained any project.
There is one feature that most will carry to the weak side of the personality, but I think it is strong: it's difficult to separate personal and work. I have worked with my friends, I'm friends with colleagues and feel hypocritical to behave differently at work and beyond. Such non-separation and prevents and helps. But for me as a person living work 24/7, it is still another little plus for a really efficient alignment of communication.
I am inspired by people open to the world.
Weaknesses:
- Emotionality. This dual feature. On the one hand, it is useful: it is the ability to openly show their emotions, to share the joy with others, emotional people charged energy of others. But, on the other hand, emotion sometimes plays havoc with her owner. After all the negative emotions we project onto others, and not always a reason connected with the man who came under the hot hand.
- Sometimes I am wrong in others. This does not mean that I do not understand them, but often rely more on external and verbal criteria for evaluating people, rather than intuitive, and I was more than once led to disappointment.
How does your workplace?
Love free of trash jobs. Quite a laptop, pen and a sheet of paper without any gifts, picture frames, and that the work may be superfluous.
With me always phone (iPhone 6, 128 GB). This of course, he's my mini-computer. This is my opportunity to be always mobile. I have a laptop in the office and at home, I rarely drive it along. For trips - MacBook Air 11 ", 512, 8 GB; mainstream notebook - MacBook Pro 13 ", 512, 16 GB.
I turned off almost all the push-notification, in addition to incoming calls and messages from VIP-list. The VIP-list - my parents, loved ones, and all colleagues from the commercial director to office manager. But the habit of regularly look in the mailbox I have formed stable.
I try not to waste time on all the small stuff, and the most occupy your day with a moment of waking up. I have on every occasion there is an application "Calendar". It is synchronized with all devices and for me is the easiest tool for time management and planning of the day.
Application "Notes" for me as a notebook, in which I constantly am making notes and ideas, or use it as a draft for writing various documents.
Must-have-app:
- post office,
- viber,
- the calendar,
- Megogo,
- facebook,
- Bookmate,
- mobile banking.
"Calendar", "Mail" and "Notes" - regular application iOS and Mac OS.
To a lesser extent - sports trackers (RunKeeper jogging, Workout Timer for CrossFit and Freeletics). Also, from time to time I am using the application for reading news and purchase tickets.
Is there a place in your paper work?
The specificity of our field is that there are few who uses notebooks. In addition to agreements on paper that we rarely appears.
But often, I make short notes on paper, draw in the process of explaining something to colleagues. Also often I use a sheet of paper for the unfolding of successive tasks for the day.
What is in your bag?
The contents of my daily bag is unlikely to surprise someone diversity. Keys, documents, eye drops and sometimes containers for lenses, mini wallet with a pass, bank card and petty cash. Often, all this can be simply expanded in pockets, that I sometimes do.
The contents of the bag for travel depends on where I'm going, for what purpose and for how long. But a few years ago, I was currently on duty list of what to take and what to do before leaving, and always follow him.
How do you organize your time?
As already mentioned, the most occupy your day with a moment of waking up. But the first hour devote themselves exclusively, included in life. Watering flowers, feed the cat, and then drink a glass of water with vitamins and exercise, and only then take a shower and breakfast.
On the way to the office to do the first calls - on work and family. External try to organize a meeting at the beginning or end of the day, so as not to break the schedule.
Every day is unique, and to say that I have it all goes the same way, I can not. There are some events that break down your day, when someone pulls you out of the workflow with the cry: "Help, lost everything, went to save the world!". It is important to quickly assess the criticality of the situation and see if it really was gone and whether you want to run to save the world.
How do you feel about the delegation of authority?
If you want to do something well, do it yourself. But when you need to do a lot of good, it is necessary delegate. From this point you need not only to talk and control, but also to train, put your emotional approach to the delegated tasks.
What's your daily routine?
My mode can be called kachelnym. Today, I can go to bed at ten o'clock, and tomorrow - five in the morning. However, I rarely put himself Service: he used to wake up at the right time. it is important for me not only to sleep, but then I wake up. Service pulls you out of sleep and may do a disservice.
I am happy when all goals are achieved.
My productivity depends on the general condition and mood. But I consider myself a person manages to do a lot in a short period of time.
My day often ends in view mail and news reading.
How to pass the time in traffic jams?
cork critical for me, unless I was very late. In this case, I often change to public transport. In the rest of the plug me - it's a time when you're in the car alone, no one bothers you and you can do a lot of important things to do over the phone.
What's your hobby?
I like to discover new places. Apparently, so I love to travel. Over the past ten years, it seems to me, I traveled halfway around the world. Ahead of the second part.
I dream of a big house in Barcelona.
What place sport occupies in your life?
Not a day without sports - this is about me! With his friend and colleague, I go running and one of the varieties CrossFit. To ride a bike. A couple of times went to him in the office and at meetings.
Often alternate their studies. In the summer season - outdoor sports. In the winter - a gym.
Homes too do. Ten minutes of sports in the morning - the same mandatory program, how to clean your teeth. And these are not just ten minutes morning exercise, namely a good intense workout.
Layfhakerstvo from Victor Chekanova
some of my life and professional principles can be attributed to layfhakerstvu:
- I do not spend time arguing for bad subjects. Hopeless - it religion, politics, parenting. In such debates hardly born truth.
- I realized quite early that the advice of my parents for me the most valuable. More valuable is that if I act in their own way, they have always supported me.
- If someone made a mistake, I will not tell him, "Do you remember I told you?". Help teach, but not accusations.
- When most around screaming "Help, all is lost!", I'll take it for mass hysteria and examine whether the really happened something bad.
- There are three types of relationships to change in life. They may be afraid, they can adapt to the varying degrees of success, and the changes can be created. The third option is closer to me. The second works too.
- If I say, "That does not happen, because that no one tried to" - it means for me to be another challenge.
- The best lighting for selfie - in fitting room Abercrombie & Fitch. :)
books
The most interesting thing to read an autobiography - or a life experience of the author, or look at the history of the living eye, rather than encyclopedic. I was interested in the memoirs of Prince Yusupov ( "Prince Felix Yusupov. Memoirs»). In his autobiography, you can get acquainted with the historical events from the perspective of someone who created them.
A few autobiographical books:
- Henry Ford "My life, my achievements»;
- Salvador Dali "Diary of a genius»;
- Vladimir Pozner "Parting with illusions»;
- Winston Churchill "Never give up! The best speech of Churchill».
TED lecture
For the practice of the English language TED is ideal. I often watch lectures not only on business topics, but also the natural sciences. View a list of recent lectures by me:
- Work-life balance: balancing time or balancing identity? - Michelle Ryan;
- How to manage for collective creativity - Linda Hill;
- Why you will fail to have a great career - Larry Smith;
- Wearable Tech Expands Human Potential - Lauren Constantini;
- Searching for the Genetic Code of our Universe - Joe Incandela;
- Journey to the early universe - Meenakshi Narain.
More strongly advise to pay attention to the adaptation of TED lectures on "Rain." Try to see at least one - you will not regret.
Movies
At one time I attended a film club where there were interesting lectures on cinema showing rare retrofilmov and the earliest masterpieces of cinema. Then I became interested in not only feature films, but also experimental.
I watch a lot of mainstream cinema. But the movie, which left me a deep impression, can include the painting "Intolerance"David Wark Griffith (1916),"Man with a Movie Camera"Dziga Vertov (1929) and"Un Chien Andalou"Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí (1929). These films need to see at least once in their lifetime.
More like "The Passion of Joan of Arc"Carl Dreyer (1928) and"Dogvil"Lars von Trier (2003). These films are rarely changed, but remember forever.
In addition to a large number of professional blogs and websitesI love to read the tape Corpuscula, Meduza and slightly peculiar news aggregator Breakingmad.
What is your life motto?
There is a beautiful expression in the English language, a good description of my life principle. It sounds so: «I dare for more» ( «I have the courage for more").
Therefore, do not spare neither strength nor energy to fulfill its potential. Read good books, communicate with intelligent people, and please be inquisitive. I have not seen a single person who would try to have acted, and he failed to achieve the desired. All turns out only to those who do.
