How leaders behave during the work day, it affects the success of the entire company.
Scientists surveyed more than 1000 leaders from six countries to find out what they do during the day and how their behavior affects the success and failure of their companies.
According to the surveyCEO Behavior and Firm Performance.The time is normally distributed throughout the day as follows:
- 56% - meetings and conferences;
- 26% - planning, communicating by e-mail and other similar cases;
- 10% - personal questions;
- 8% - the trip.
Researchers have also studied what was spent this time. It turned out that the behavior of managers can be divided into two groups: leaders and managers.
Managers longer interact with the staff of the supply chain, meet with clients and suppliers. The leaders also generally interact with senior managers and external stakeholders, a lot of planning and talking.
The former are usually run by small enterprises, and the latter more likely to be at the helm of a large and complex companies arranged.
Comparing the type of leader with the financial performance of the company, the researchers came to the conclusion that the leaders of the company more successful and profitable.
The researchers compared the data before and after the appointment of a new leader. It turned out that after the appearance of the head of a leading company productivity increases. The effect is manifested in three years, and this suggests that the leaders really making an effort to change the company.
Of course, then as head of the holding day, it depends on the company and on its current status. In times of crisis need one set of skills, and at the time of stable development - quite different.
Scary, if a small company is the leader, the leader, but the reverse situation can bring much more harm. Leaders, managers tend too much time on the company's current activities and often engage in micromanagement.
Although this study provides a new perspective on management, the authors do not advise managers to change their behavior, looking at the others. When making decisions, especially should focus on the situation and their strengths. Try to find the qualities and use them, as well as pick up a situation in which they unfold.
