My namesake, Tom, really touched on an interesting and relevant topic. I have often thought of everything that has made me what I am today, and that gave me an education.
Let's face it: modern education - complete bullshit, from school! You can blame the ministers can be held conspiracy theories, but is taught in the first place are now those who themselves went through a "filter 90", so to say about the staff in a good sense is not necessary. At the University are very few young people, because they are just not interested to teach for a ridiculous salary. But does this mean that you can learn in a slipshod manner?
School for me was something akin to a branch of hell in the southern Chertanovo. No, I was not an excellent student, and I was not an outsider (well, except that the names in the list). Nevertheless, the school had exhausted me, at the time of admission to college, I have shattered his nervous system, and has developed a pair of disgusting habits of hard-core procrastination when the forces have no choice. It probably saved from a nervous breakdown.
Chemistry at school was taught in the "bison or die!" Over all, our famous "teacher" (she has even a group of haters VKontakte) held a one experience - the production of hydrogen, and then only by the fact that we were shooting that day at the graduation video album. So we did the whole 15 minutes of experience, and the remaining half an hour we had to write a test in express mode.
History, in my opinion, generally discredited, and I doubt very much (since high school doubted) that I'd rather be demand in society, if I remember exactly the date of the abolition of serfdom (by the way I remember it, it just coincided with my day birth).
Boring lessons of life safety, "works" without difficulty, sluggish geography, physics properties with sleeping pills.
In fact, I believe that the natural sciences are more necessary than the man. Someone might say: why me physics? Personally, I repeatedly came in handy as a basic knowledge of physics and in chemistry, and continue to come in handy every day. Mathematics in the program to grades 8-9 is also used in life quite often (I'm not talking about differentiation and integration, but it's funny that even trigonometry came in handy a few times).
Most importantly, the natural sciences, coupled with the ability to learn to give some general worldview, which I would recommend to have all school graduates (not to mention the higher education institutions). Unfortunately, the complete formation of my world began only after admission.
I went to the Olympics in mathematics, thus I felt the whole gulf between the level of mathematics at Moscow State University and in our school. Later, I suddenly realized that learning can not. I somehow pulled exams, the first, second session closed with difficulty (with threefold in mathematics and history, well, where do without it). However, after the first practice, where we learned a completely different atmosphere (I was a geologist) suddenly came some intuitive understanding how to learn, and in addition began to develop an understanding of the world and the very worldview that generalizes all knowledge into a coherent unified system.
Next, I went almost without straining, as it came and the love of the subjects that I have taught, and joint study and preparation for exams in the classrooms in the evenings the MSU made itself felt: I was even recorded in the "bot-club», in the session on the fine where I was listed as 3 semester in a row. Yes, I fell in love with chemistry, passed the exams without a crib on a very solid 4 (we had a rating system that gave to understand how much you have not held up to the next point), but ahead looms bright future in the ranks of our vast geologists homeland. However, by this time I was very well programmed, and on the related computer skills specialties were increased almost at the same rate as knowledge of thermodynamics and tectonics lithospheric plates.
This story would be completely uninteresting to most readers, if not for the sudden conclusion of my career geologist: for the position of Junior Researcher I was offered a four (4) thousand rubles. By this time, I worked part time system administrator for ten, coming to "bypass" only twice a week. I decided to leave the scientists and start freelance work. Now I have a small advertising agency, a lot of customers and earnings, allowing easy to raise a son, to pay the mortgage and to think about the new car.
I am grateful for the years of nervous school or university? Rather - yes. I do not regret the chosen direction of study, because the university gave me a broad outlook and, most important and valuable - the ability to learn! Now I can easily learn new services that go with the times in its field, continue to learn and easy, not by constraint, but me the other day (who remembers when the abolition of serfdom?) Knocked 30.
Would I advise the child to "cram into five"? Of course not!
Shall I make him learn? Yes!
If you do not get this useful skill from a young age, then later, in my opinion, it will be incredibly difficult. That's just, I'm sure that the most useful knowledge about the world and the ability to acquire knowledge with interest, I instill in him a very much more efficiently than they do in today's schools.
