Innate character traits vs theory of "clean slate"

What theory do you agree: that all human beings are born free from dirt (the theory of "scratch") or all of us at birth already have certain character traits and talents that are given to us by parents? In his speech at the TED Steven Pinker raises an interesting and sensitive issue of hereditary traits.
Almost every nation has its own sayings that point to the fact that no matter how hard a person, he still will (or will not) certain character traits that got him from relatives.
At the beginning of the 20th century theory of the "clean slate" it was a very powerful and many scientists believed that children are born free from dirt. They are something of a blank slate on which you can write whatever you want, and it does not matter who their parents are. However, in his speech at the TED Steven Pinker, author of "clean sheet", expressed a different view, citing as evidence the results of their research.
So, no matter how we tried, is born an apple from an orange?
