- The device work? Then the problem is really in the port.
Clean the USB-ports
Turn off the computer and see if there is dirt and dust inside the port. This is especially true for desktop PCs, in which part or all of the ports are located at the rear. Dust can also prevent flow of air and, consequently, reduce performance.
Take a can of compressed air and clean them all the inputs.
If there is no cartridge, try to use a vacuum cleaner.
Check the list of devices connected to the computer
Through it, you can obtain information about the USB-devices, and in some cases and fix the problem with the ports.

This item is not? This may explain why your USB-device does not work. Click on "Scan for hardware changes" on the taskbar: this icon with blue screen and magnifying glass. Probably the desired item appears after the test, and the device will work as it should.
If the host controller is listed, try reinstalling it.

Repair the entrance
Ports are soldered to the circuit board inside the computer: is usually not a parent, but to separate. If you frequently use the USB-devices, the ports may become loose or fall off completely.
Often this is due to the shape of the connected devices, in particular cables and old flash drives. They can be quite heavy and fragile outweigh the entrance.
Unfastened input may indicate breakage. Plug the device into the entrance and a little stir it. The connector does not wobble. If loose, secure it with a soldering iron.
If the USB-port is not unsteady, but still does not work, it must be replaced. Make it yourself easy. Chances are, too, need a soldering iron. For example, as in this video:
