Step 1. Selection of an appropriate trigger
Trigger - is the context to which we bind a new habit. After repeated repetition sequence "context → habit" when confronted with the trigger we automatically arises the impulse to do the necessary action. This, in fact, the point of creating habits - to teach yourself on autopilot to make efficiencies.
So, start by selecting an optimal trigger for a new habit to read every day. If you have downloaded everyday work with non-standard schedule, easy to read the moment may be, for example, morning time before breakfast.
To understand the brain, to which it is the context you want to bind a new habit, the trigger should specify a maximum. If you simply mark it as "morning" or "before breakfast" is still a large proportion of uncertainty: what specific time in the morning I have to read? Where uncertainty, there procrastination. Let the trigger will be the moment when you turn the kettle coming to the kitchen for breakfast. If this is for you - existing for a few years, a habit that is repeated day after day, it is convenient to use as a trigger.
In other words, now every morning, you will perform the following sequence of actions:
- Come into the kitchen and turn on the kettle (this is a trigger).
- Immediately after that, you take the Book, which is already on the windowsill waiting in the wings.
- Sit down to read (this is a new habit).
Step 2. Defining small step for a new habit
If you just try to read 50 pages a day (especially in the morning) for a long time you do not have enough. Therefore to begin to implement a new habit should be neat. So that brainWhich is struggling to minimize our efforts to save energy, do not notice anything. Determine the amount of comfort for themselves at an early stage. For example, to read five pages a day.
Step 3. Monitoring and adjustment
Then for three weeks, you see, if you manage to stick to the habits that form in which you have identified it, and whether something needs to be corrected in the original plan. You may notice that a comfortable number of pages has increased to seven per day, and maybe even up to ten. Track gives failures if the new habit and what is their reason.
It may seem that the five pages a day - is not serious. But a month out of 150 pages, and it's definitely better than zero.
