Nassim Taleb - man extraordinary: he was convinced that the world is ruled by uncertainty, so much of his life studying the phenomena of good luck, luck, luck. According to his theory, the importance of forecasts is exaggerated, and all the great events in history - the development of the Internet, the First World War, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and so on - it was impossible to predict.
The Guardian called Taleb one of the greatest writers of the XX century.

"The opposing shore," Julien Gracq
When I wrote "Black Swan", my favorite book was "The Tartar Steppe" Dino Buzzati. This is especially the Roma, the only one that I'm willing to re-read all his life.
"The opposing coast" - is surprisingly similar story about craving to wait (instead of the "thirst for hope", as I characterize book Buzzati), but it is written in more elegant language and the present writer: Buzzati was a journalist, so his prose more pragmatic. Style narrative to "resist the shore" is concise and accurate, it has a texture, rich detail, mesmerizing atmosphere.
Once started reading, you fall in love with this novel. Reading it, I was never tired of repeating: "This is a book."

"Experiments", Michel de Montaigne
Montaigne largely companion than a teacher. Until recently, he had a bad reputation in the scientific community, as it did not have a scientific degree: he was an ordinary man with limited knowledge, but a great intellectual hunger. Therefore, his book - the perfect gateway to the classics. It is like a guide. I never travel without volume "experience" if the feeling that stuck at the airport.

"Fictional History", Jorge Luis Borges
This is very difficult to find by definition a literary author who thinks abstract categories (the other a writer, which I read - it Stanislaw Lem). This philosophical thought experiments in its pure form, which somehow magically gave the game a literary form.
Borges - the philosopher-mathematician, the first and last. Do not pay attention to its relation to Latin American literature and nonsense about his origin and his personal life. Need to resist attempts to integrate it into the socio-cultural environment: Borges is unique in so far as this is possible. In his short stories, literature and philosophy are joined in a parable.

"The history of private life", Volumes 1-5
school approach "Annals" to the understanding of history based on the prose of everyday life, far from sensational historic events: who rules, which took place the coup, which was a war or geopolitical situation. Representatives of this historical direction was not interested in events that appear to be scientific themes, but in fact are the subject of journalism.
The methodology of "Annals" largely statistical, as the school explores a number of reliable facts, not biographies of historical figures or information about the wars (as if studying our time, scientists have focused on diabetes and traffic jams, and not on sensational attacks sharks crashes).
Instead of studying Roman history of the biography of Caesar or events in Pompeii, you can learn about daily life, laws and customs. Over the past 25 years, I read and reread these five volumes.
