Books / / December 19, 2019
Each of us lives Chimpanzee. It controls our emotions. Panic or anger, joy or euphoria - all in his power. But the trick is that we can manage it. Read review of the book by Steve Peters, the brain creates a model of management, which will allow to become a happy and confident person.
Steve Peters
Professor of psychiatry. More than 20 years in clinical psychiatry. Since the beginning of the 2000s engaged in sports psychology. Advised the British cycling team, Team Sky team football Premier League, and individual athletes. Many athletes have noted that the method of Peters helped them to significantly improve the results. Public lectures, telling them how to manage emotions, and due to this to transform his life.
Who is the Chimpanzee?
According to Peters, model, human thinking is determined tromya brain regions:
- the frontal lobes - are responsible for rational thinking;
- limbic system - responsible for the irrational activity generates emotions;
- parietal lobes - are responsible for the storage and accumulation of information.
For clarity, Professor Peters appeals imaginative names:
- Man (personality, logic and facts);
- The computer (memory and perception);
- Chimpanzees (our emotions and natural instincts).
Chimpanzee nor bad nor good, it may be our best friend or worst enemy. This is the paradox.
This book is designed to teach us how to manage their Chimpanzee, ie to manage their emotions. Especially negative. Remember how many times have you said to yourself, "I do not know what came over me", "It was not as if I have" and so on. It's really not you - is the monkey inside you (hello, Darwin!).
So, for chimp is crucial to defend their territory. Therefore, we are so sensitive to the violation of personal space. Territorial disputes (someone took your place in the parking lot, a colleague will spam your desktop) almost always lead to cries and scandals.
No less strong parental instinct, that is, the desire and the need to be a parent, coupled with the need to protect the offspring.
In this Chimpanzees can not win, they can only be controlled.
There is no point in trying to control the Chimpanzee using willpower. You can not change the nature of his chimpanzee, but you are responsible for managing them.
How to train a chimp and take control of your emotions? On this and the story book.
Why I liked the book?
- Vivid images (chimpanzee, man, computer, planets, etc.) are easy to remember and clearer to understand. Complex is presented extremely simple, as in children's literature.
- The described methods really work (checked). Using them, you can neutralize the negative emotions: sadness, anxiety, frustration. Now I know that the presence of these feelings is not bad, it does not mean that with me that something is wrong. Feel, including the negative - this is normal. We just need to manage emotions and be responsible for the acts which they encourage.
- The language of the narrative easy, no intricate medical terminology. The book can be read in a few hours, despite a decent amount (over 400 pages).
- In the edition of many amusing illustrations. They are pleasing to the eye and help to assimilate information at the expense of visual images.
My personal assessment "paradox Chimpanzee" Steve Peters - 7 out of 10.
