Technologies / / December 19, 2019
In recent years operating systems based on Linux We have achieved impressive results in the creation of a friendly environment for both work and leisure. However, there are the "free" systems of significant drawbacks, not to think of that would not be fair. First of all, it is still insufficient support existing hardware. In particular this applies to the battery life of laptops running Ubuntu, which can greatly yield to the time battery life when using Windows. In this article, we'll look at two tools that are designed to correct this situation.
Attention! Simultaneous use of tools described below can lead to problems. To try another, remove the previous one.
TLP
There are various tweaks that you can apply to your laptop to save battery power, but many of them are dependent on hardware and Linux distribution, others are outdated or too difficult to use without complicated spells in command line. TLP is designed to solve many of these problems, and applies optimal settings for your configuration automatically, depending on the version of Linux and hardware.
Used a lot of tweaks and a detailed description of them is beyond the scope of this article, therefore we suggest you refer to help page utility (Eng.). Please just note that the utility operates completely independently and does not even have a GUI.
Set TLP can be performed in the terminal the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: linrunner / tlp. sudo apt-get update. sudo apt-get install tlp tlp-rdw
Laptop Mode Tools
This application allows you to extend the life of your laptop battery, enabling the incorporation of the appropriate mode in the Linux kernel, along with other energy-saving settings. In its essence it is very similar to the discussed above TLP and just worked until recently only through the command line. However, starting with version 1.64 in Laptop Mode Tools appeared graphical interface that gives a little more freedom and ease of configuration.
To install the utility, enter in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: webupd8team / unstable. sudo apt-get update. sudo apt-get install laptop-mode-tools
To start the GUI Laptop Mode Tools, run the following command:
gksu lmt-config-gui
Of course, after reading this review, you have a question "which of the tools effective?". Unfortunately, the clear answer to this question can not be given. Though Laptop Mode Tools and TLP works on the same parameters, the final results will be strongly depend on the specific notebook model and version of the operating system, so you need to check only empirically. On the results of their experiments do not forget to share in the comments.
