For operating systems based on Linux, there are several different shells, about some of which we wrote in this article. One of the most popular of these is XFCE, and having a "firm" distribution - Xubuntu. It has many advantages, including low system requirements, excellent speed and wide possibilities for customization. However, the main menu of this shell, virtually unchanged transferred from Gnome 2, can not be called comfortable. The usual hierarchical menu with a large number of installed programs turns into a maze in which to get lost and no wonder. Therefore, we recommend that you pay attention to the program Whisker Menu, correcting this deficiency.
Whisker Menu - this is an alternative, "main menu" for XFCE shell. In contrast to the simple, but not too comfortable, provided the default drop-down menu, here all the elements sorted into thematic sections and, most importantly, there is a search bar. Windows to make it clearer to users, the difference is about the same as the Windows XP Start menu differs from the corresponding Windows 7 item.
Thus, we have two equally easy ways to launch programs. In that case, if you remember the name of the fastest type a few letters into the search bar. If you do not remember the name of the utility, but you know what it is, then you can easily find it in the appropriate category. And, of course, for the commonly used software has a special section Favorites.
In the settings Whisker Menu you can customize the look and behavior of the menu, select a custom icon for the button and some other options. Install the program can perform the following commands in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gottcode / gcppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin
After installation, right-click on the XFCE panel and add a new element called Whisker Menu. You can then move the applet to the desired position on the panel.
