Web applications, about which we are constantly writing in special surveys, more deeply penetrate our computers and are gradually replacing the conventional program. The developers of the popular distribution Ubuntu even want to speed up this process and are going to introduce in the next version of its operating system, a new technology called Web AppProviding enhanced support for services such as Gmail, Google Docs, Facebook, Vkontakte, Yandex. Music and many others. Let's see what they have.
Despite the fact that the full support Web App will only appear in Ubuntu 12.10, you can still try this feature now. To do this you will need to open a terminal and type there are several series of commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: webapps / preview. sudo apt-get update. sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview
After that, you must restart the Unity shell. Now run a browser and at the entrance to one of the supported sites see a proposal to integrate this service into the operating system. Although in theory this feature should work in any browser, I have it worked only in Chromium.
Once you have agreed to the proposal, the online service will receive a residence permit in your system. For example, in the case of Gmail in the taskbar will be a new icon and in the notification area in the messaging menu will display information about your new messages.
If it's music services, they are integrated in the sound menu. With it, you can start and stop playback, view information about the current track, and even covers.
It looks quite attractive, is not it? Despite the fact that the Web Apps technology is still under development, the list of supported services includes the majority of the most popular items:
Mail services:
- GMail
- Yahoo! Mail
- yandex Mail
- QQ Mail
- Windows Live Mail
- Mail RU
Social Networks:
- Google+
- VK.com
- Linked In
- YouTube
Music:
- Libre.fm
- Last.fm
- Pandora
- Grooveshark
- Hulu Player
- yandex Music
News Sites:

- CNN News
- Yahoo! News (News.yahoo.com/)
- google News (News.google.com)
- yandex News (News.yandex.ru)

- Reddit (Reddit.com)
As we can once again clearly see the application in the process of transition is inevitable and predictable network. The only question is what form this will take place. Google ChromeOS in your project is trying to drag the entire operating system in the cloud, and Ubuntu, it is on the contrary, they want to get services from the browser and introduce them into the envelope. Let's see who wins.
