Meet Lingvo for Mac!
Makradar Technologies / / December 19, 2019
Today's event - from the category of "better late than never": a little bit late, the company Abbyy Finally mac-released version of Lingvo dictionary. Prior to this, users accustomed to Windows times to Lingvo, had to convert dictionaries and connect them to Dictonary.app. The procedure, though not complex, but still geeky.
Lingvo for Mac will be distributed in two versions - the electronic and boxed. The recommended price - 1340 rubles and 1440 rubles, respectively. For this money, the user receives a set of dictionaries in English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish (+3 Russian dictionary - popular, and Collegiate Thesaurus). Total 125 dictionaries, which cover all areas of human activity, ranging from medicine and health and ending with computers and telecoms.
Quality dictionaries - at the highest level, what actually expect from Abbyy. Learn about the pronunciation of a word can be due to voice acting, a trained person, not a robot.
As is the case with TranslateIt, Lingvo can show the translation of the word under the pointer. It works only in Cocoa-applications, and even then not all. In Opera, which was recently rewritten to the Cocoa, "Linguistic" often "misses the mark", showing a neighboring word translation. The same can be said about the translation of the word in Google Chrome. Safari users need not worry - there are translation works without comment. TranslateIt in this regard, more reliable - they've already done crutches for working with "alternative" browsers. Unpleasant surprise was the fact that Lingvo shows translation of the word hover in Preview.app - built into OSX program that allows you to read PDF-files.
I liked that in the translation of the word Lingvo can be obtained not only when the cursor, but also with the mandatory retention of key Option. In this case, the pop-ups will not irritate.
Interface and appearance Lingvo - simple and convenient. Not without flaws, but it is best that there is now among electronic dictionaries for Mac.
***
Overall Lingvo yield pleased, but would like to see in the next version improved the compatibility with Preview.app.
At the moment Lingvo looks the most attractive option for Mac-users. The program costs less than a lifetime license TranslateIt. In this Abbyy offers quality dictionaries. The "SlovoEd" dictionaries is also excellent, but worse interface.
It will be interesting to follow the reaction of competitors. Strengthen whether the "Paragon" work on their vocabulary? How will TranslateIt? Until the last moment they were selling two versions of its applications - with the annual and lifetime license. Dictionary - a program that users have so often buy again. I use Windows "Linguistic" seven years ago, and can not imagine how you can buy a dictionary every year.
So, friends, I congratulate all of us - there was selection :-)
