Upgrade to iOS 7 style is not spared and everyone's favorite twitter-client Tweetbot. Designerzord.com creator of the site, Sam Rosenthal I took Interview with Mark Jardine - co-founder and chief designer Tapbots - to find out where came from and where moves are now one of the most successful twitter-clients in history. Read on, dear developers of applications and shakes into their heads!
Hi Mark. Thank you for agreeing to talk. Could you tell us a little about yourself and your work in Tapbots?
Thank you, Sam. My name is Mark Jardine and I work as a designer in Tapbots - a small company that produces the software. We create applications for iOS and Mac. I work at home, and I live in Northern California with his wife, two young sons and a dog. We Haddad Paul Tapbots created about 4 years ago. He has been programming our products and everything that is connected with the business, and I am responsible for creative side - design applications, sounds, and marketing aspects, such as websites or advertising video. I confess that I always try to put in my illustrations. I always wanted to be an illustrator, but I can not handle.
Tapbots has enjoyed success in the App Store, especially your Tweetbot. What prompted you to create a client for Twitter and difficulties remembered work on it?
Pastebot - I was the first application where we have revised their views and use the list format to give it a resemblance to most applications, and the result we liked. We have always wondered about the Twitter-client, but they were not confident in their abilities. Pastebot success gave us that confidence. The hardest part in creating Tweetbot was to maintain a balance between visual appeal and functionality. The main Twitter-client function - reading, but these heavy "chrome plating" elements of distraction. I have always believed that we could create the perfect Twitter-client, but sacrificed the opportunity for the recognition of our brand. However, this formula has worked, and I do not regret what was done. I learned a good lesson, and now, when she iOS 7, in Tapbots life begins a new chapter and we are changing to become even better.
Tapbots applications are always different from its competitors memorable appearance. Updates many legendary applications for iOS7 have been criticized for being too hard copy Apple design. How do you plan to avoid this and maintain individuality?
iOS7 only appeared and developers need time to find your own style. We're working on it, and our main goal - to create not just an external storage application, but one that will bring pleasure of using. That is what differentiates one application from another.
What I like most about Tapbots, so that's how much attention is paid to detail in applications that determine the nature and indidualnost. Sounds numeric identifier hidden on the background - how long have you been thinking about all these details, and how important they are for ordinary users?
I believe that working with the little things - this is very important. Apple and such recognized companies as a Panic always succeeded. Our company was created with the expectation that the software should not just functional, but also bring joy, so we dedicate a lot of time sounds and animation.
The creators of the game, for example, to understand how much finalized the design, just play their games in the test mode. What do you do before the product hits the App Store?
I often guided by feelings. I think most of intuition helps me determine what will work and what - no. So I'll use their applications and if I do not like them - that they like the others? If I like it, then the application goes into the hands of a few guys who do the beta test. And if they, too, are happy, we are releasing a product to the public.
I often hear the suggestion that the market for paid apps is slowly dying. Tapbots a success, even though they were not free. What do you think about this, if you have one day to change their sales strategy?
Yes, there is such a trend, but I think we'll stay afloat. We offer applications that are not even want to try if you do not feel in their urgent need. Appendix for a few dollars is not too difficult to sell.
Videos that we do for each new product - a very important part of our policy. We tried to make them more honest as possible: that's - the smartphone, and here - the app and it works. No cheating. These videos help us to attract customers, because everyone wants to see "how it works" before you get the purse.
However, we are always ready to try new things. Perhaps one day create with integrated shopping is a free application and see what happens. This is a big plus small companies - it is easier to take risks.
Recently I released Tweetbot 3, and although corporate chrome disappeared, the app has retained its original style through the use of movement. What inspired you to use the new physics and how it affected your work on the design?
I've always been in awe of physics that Lauren Brihter use in their applications. When I learned about the UI Dynamics in iOS 7, I decided to move in this direction. The only reason for which the original was used Tweetbot such ponderous physics was that we followed the style of our previous products. iOS 7 forced to leave it in the past and it was good for. I tried to keep all the details that are so loved by our users and make the interface "native" for iOS 7. We've removed a lot, making the app smaller and faster, but the important thing was saved.
It seems to me, Apple has refused to make skeuomorph applications as convenient and easy to use. Do you agree that skeuomorph makes the interface more cumbersome and less intuitive?
It all depends on the application. For twitter-client, perhaps yes. And if you take something simple like a calculator, you want to add interesting visual design. I am not in the camp of opponents skeuomorph - I just developing an application for a specific platform. Today, it is iOS 7. People can argue all day about which is better, but we are third-party developers and easily create products for Apple's operating systems. We will follow her and maybe add something of yourself if you feel it is necessary. No need to hold on to the past, I always try to move forward.
What are the difficulties encountered in Tapbots, adjusting to iOS7?
In fact, the problems until it was. We can easily become accustomed to the new appearance, though, physics was a bit more difficult. But the real difficulty, it seems to me, waiting for us to work on the rest of our applications.
You often call yourself a gamer. Do you find inspiration in the games to work and which has recently released games impressed you the most?
Wii Fit was the inspiration for our first application Weightbot. As for the games that inspire me, I'm more casual appeal. Progress in the chart does not impress me, it is quite expected. But such things as 3DS AR Nintendo's much more interesting, and what makes the Sony on PS4 in this direction - also very cool.
In conclusion, I want to talk about your plans for the future Tapbots. What would you like for the company? What a legacy to leave the dream?
I have no plans grander than to create applications that people will want to use. I really like my job, I just want to improve in this area. It would be nice 5-10 years to become as legendary as the Panic, but I prefer to live segodnyashy day.
